    Welcome to the N.H.K = Oreimo = TWGOK = Steins;gate = Otaku pandering shit & wish fulfilment.

Sure there are some minor differences: harem show / no harem; good tsunderes, bad tsunderes. But at heart all these shows are about celebrating the otaku lifestyle, and peddling the fantasy that hot girls will fall in love with you even if you're a disgusting nerd. By coincidence all these shows are also popular on /a/.

    Discuss.

Maybe so, I wont argue the point. Let's say there's some parts of it that's pandering and celebration, and some parts are realistic.

But the main point is that NHK is the oldest of those four and the other three is only celebration and pandering. They got the idea from NHK and ran with it and now it's a genre; yet another money in the bank way to buy the audience with flatter and wish fulfilment.

Like, everything else is too mainstream. Everything other than NHK, Oreimo, TWGOK, and Steins;Gate is just pandering to otakus. Anything with action is big 3 shounenshit for casuals. Hardcore people like don't like haremshit that have more than 3 girls, and nobody else should as well. Fucking moeshit ruining my anime industry, why can't there be more anime like Welcome to the N.H.K.? On second thought, forget that. If shows like that became popular, then they would be otaku pandering too. What's that? Shows that have otaku protagonists doing unrealistic things by the powers of being otakus and getting girls all around them because of it is otaku chic to do so isn't realistic and just wish fulfillment pandering to the audience who easily selfinserts into the roles? I disagree on many points. The first is that Okarin is still in his first year of college, has ambition and drive, and is actually drawn to be fairly good looking.

Whereas Sato-kun is a shut-in and a drop out. He's not bad looking, but the first two are very much against him. Which is why I had to suspend my disbelief much more during NHK than in Steins;Gate --- because as retarded as the SCIENCE in S;G is, I would sooner believe it was real than I would believe that a girl like Misaki would just waltz into Sato-kun's life.

NHK and TWGOK both pander to otaku, but they don't have anything else whatsoever in common.

Girls flock to Keima because he's good-looking and actually a bit of a player. And that's the story arc girls. His classmates mock him because they're jealous of his waifus.

As for NHK, Misaki's a broken, self-loathing mess with a savior complex. She's not that hot, and relationships with girls like this rarely end well - but they do occur, take it from me.

    (Haven't seen the other two.)

And what's wrong with showing otaku characters? Shouldn't fiction have characters the viewers can relate to? And it's not as though they're a rare cultural subgroup in Japan - if anything they're underrepresented, not overrepresented in anime.

It is more about the fanbases of those series being intensely elitist against everything else, and then not being able to see that what they defend as not otaku pandering is in fact extremely otaku pandering. I already clarified that maybe yes, NHK has some parts that are pandering, and other parts that deals with real life problems of the Otaku/Hikikomori lifestyle. But it's from way back in 2002, the other three have built upon the basic premise, kept the pandering & wish fulfilment and thrown out the realistic parts.

How's NHK even otaku pandering? Satou isn't an otaku, and it covers a lot of Japanese subcultures, not just anime fandom. Yes, many otaku are hikkis and NEET, but that alone doesn't make it otaku-pandering - it's not the same thing. Yamazaki is, but he's not the hero, and his life doesn't go that great.

And I haven't seen that from the fanbases anyway.

(As for TWGOK... yeah, it is otaku-pandering. Not gonna deny it.)

Rewatch episodes 3 & 4 & 5 for example and consider that at that point there's no reason whatsoever for Tatsuhiro to have any girl showing any interest in him whatsoever, let alone two girls. Yes, maybe the story develops in another direction later but that doesnt mean that wish fulfilment wasnt delivered up to that point. Eps 3 & 4 is pretty much Tatsuhiro and Kaoru reveling in Otakuness and nerd-dom.

But apart from that, even with the resolution NHK is still using unrealistic wish fulfilment to keep the viewer hooked in the first half of the show. In real life neither of the girls would even have said hi, no matter how fucked up they were.

You really those shows got the idea of parodying otaku from NHK? Seriously? This isn't a very obscure topic. It's like saying video games got the idea of doing WWII settings from Call of Duty.

Yes, and I'm sure it would've made for a fascinating show if that were to happen.

Hitomi knew Satou from back when they were just kids and Satou was just a slacker. Talking to old friends isn't odd.

The entire point of Misaki is to show just how fucked up the fantasy is,

That's not the point, and they're not "paroding" otakus so much as they are celebrating otakus and pandering to them. TWGOK, Oreimo and Steins;gate that is.

My point was that back in 2002 that wasnt the norm, but now it is because industry people know pandering sells.

    >It's not strange at all that the hot childhood friend wants to screw the clueless beta faggot MC

Just listen to yourself man. And in NHK ep5, how he throws his NEET, Hikikamori life in her face and the next thing she does is ask for his number and to see him again. Whatever happens next you cant pretend thats not wish fulfilment to keep the viewer interested at that point in the story.

    OPs post is basically true.

I remember years back when 4chan was pretty new. People would basically condemn content like this and would never give it the time of day.

Now the years have passed and the rest of us moved on. The people who have nothing else and cling to anime have changed this board from general discussion to incessant spamming of moe anime/visual novels and these otaku shows. I'm not even sure why I browse /a/ anymore since it's basically all spam and meme spouting, with the exception of half dead threads posted at night.

Hitomi doesn't want to screw. That's the point. Satou assumes the does, and you, the viewer, assume she does, but she doesn't, never did, and never will.

?Your childhood friend never wanted you like that, and never will" doesn't sound like much of a fantasy to me.

It isn't "pandering". It's simply having an audience (otaku) who would identify with the topic. TV shows that glorify life in New York or as a housewife aren't necessarily "pandering" to their audiences.

You do have some stuff out there, but it really isn't the norm now either. NHK was no where near the first, or the only around that time. There was stuff like Genshiken, Comic Party, and Animation Runner Kuromi heavily rooted in otaku/anime culture.

Oh look, it's one of those "4chan was good" faggots.

    4chan was never good.

NHK and genshiken (especially genshiken) are examples of pandering. Simply portraying the otaku life would make for a sad and digusting anime. Instead they pander to their otaku fanbase by putting someone seemingly otaku in situations that they would love to be in.
