To be fair, Kamina was getting better. He did go toe to toe with Viral just before his death while Simon was occupied with Dai-Gurren, and managed to overpower Viral with relative ease. Contrast it to the first time they fought, and he go curbstomped until Simon showed up.

He may have low spiral energy, but that doesn't stop him from learning to be a decent mech pilot. He just wasn't ever going to be throwing galaxies.
