Side dishes aren't just in Japan, most entrees you buy at restaurants or even food you make at home will have a side dish. Example, you have a steak. The steak is the main dish, the vegetable and the starch foods you eat with the main dish is the side dish.

I guess most of the time we just call them "sides" instead of "side dish." I don't know what the Japanese use for their main dishes, I would assume it's different depending on the meal they eat.
