in the most common form of usage, as characters intended to be cute,
are not necessary to tell a story either. See the entire noir genre,
where you'd be hard pressed to find a "moe" character. Fanservice as
it exists now is hardly necessary for a show to be enjoyable, it's a
bonus in most anime and one that could easily be removed from most shows
not of the ecchi/hentai genre.
But I guess non-ecchi and non-pandering makes a show pretentious shit nowadays, so disregard me. |
