I think that was the Christmas episode, if I remember right. Seriously.

I love how Pokemon is a series where Brock can suddenly start flying, Ash is suddenly riding a Lapras naked, and when you come across someone being mobbed by wild animals, the first thing you should do is pull out your pocket encyclopedia and listen to a lengthy explanation about how those are bats that like to live in caves. And this is all just another typical day.

I know this has probably been said by EVERYONE EVER, but I REALLY wish that they had done a protagonist switch whenever the series would shift to a new region.

The Protagonist from the last season would still be around, of course, but they'd act as more of a mentor. Team Rocket would still be up to their shenanigans regardless of who the current troupe of twerps is composed of.

The series would then follow the formula of the anime practically the same, except the protagonist of that season WINS their region's league. Then for the finale of the season, we get a final battle between the current protagonist and last season's protagonist, as a way to pass the torch, in a sense.

Then there'd be the occasional filler arc where ALL the protagonists from past seasons, as well as the current one get together for, say, a special tournament of some sort. It has no major impact on the storyline, save for some character development for the current protagonist, and will likely never get mentioned, not even in passing, until it's time for the next filler arc.
