New Zealand has a three strike law for piracy coming in tomorrow.

The law effectively allows the police to fine you and disconnect your internet after you've been warned three times for suspected piracy. It's a massive breach of our rights as it allows them to assume we are guilty (which we are) and punish us, denying our right to a fair trial and also the innocent until proven guilty assumption.

The law was also passed under Urgency so the New Zealand public weren't allowed their opinion on it and it was all done under the table. There was quite a shitstorm.

In April 2011 the New Zealand Government passed the Copyright (Infringing File Sharing) Amendment Act 2011. This act amends the Copyright Act 1994 to provide owners (Rights holders) of copyrighted works such as movies, TV shows and music with a quicker and easier way to penalise people infringing their copyright (from illegal downloading). Under this legislation, from the 11th of August 2011 rights holders can begin to monitor for Internet access which breaches their copyright, and to begin sending infringement notices for breaches of copyright from the 1st of September 2011.

Low internet caps aren't bad as long as you ration it out. I still download a shit tonne of anime which I get from low-sized anime encoders. Great sizes, great quality but less choice in fansubbers and I have to wait about a day after it gets released by the fansubbers before I can watch it.

I know. The fact that milk price hasn't dropped because National has shares in Fontera pisses me off.

But look at the alternatives. National's only real rival is Labour and whatshisface doesn't have enough support to get voted in. People don't like the guy. All the minor parties don't stand a chance. National will easily get the most seats. However, Labour is more buddy buddy with the smaller parties so while it is almost guaranteed National will win the elections, it is possible National won't form a coalition to gain the majority and we might have a Labour led Government after all. However, that is unlikely and we will most likely face 3 more years of National.

Labour tried to get it passed and failed so they didn't bring it back. National resurrected it and passed it under urgency because John Key wants to protect large companies and knew the public would be against it if he did it legit so he weaseled it in with the Christchurch Earthquake Funding Act so he could get around it. And people will STILL ELECT THE EVIL CUNT DESPITE EVERYTHING. Fucking hell. All he's interested in is lining his own pockets.

And Labour is just as fucking bad. They accepted and voted for this law even though they disagree with it. They said the law was evil but they wanted to vote for it so the public would think they were more 'positive'. FUCK. THIS. SHIT.

use of cyberspace has been a rich tradition for the Tangatawhenua, ever since the great canoes arrived here from the islands of Hawaiki. It was said that the great skeleton of a taniwha was used as a channel that transmits the exploits of crippled medicine men, red haired sinner-hunters and murals of little girls doing adorable things as painted by the far northern tribes who we now know as the Japanese across these lands.

I'm from NZ... Oh shit I completely forgot about this... I'm sure my anime dls will be fine. Does this only apply to torrents? If so it looks like it's gonna be a tedious DDL/XDCC

it only applies to file sharing services

so anything thats ddl like xdcc and direct downloads are fine

because the copyright holders cant monitor those anyway
    >> Anonymous 08/10/11(Wed)07:48 No.53154100
    From the bill:

    “file sharing is where:

“(a) material is uploaded via, or downloaded from, the Internet
    using an application or network that enables the simultaneous sharing of material between multiple users;

    and

“(b) uploading and downloading may, but need not, occur at
    the same time

It's p2p only, and the copyright holder has to pay to send a complaint to your ISP. Which isn't likely to happen often.
    >> Anonymous 08/10/11(Wed)07:50 No.53154137
Shit shit shit. 10 minutes left to download Hellsing Ultima OVA 8.

    >> Anonymous 08/10/11(Wed)07:50 No.53154138
    >>53154100
Yes. But considering the copyright holder actually has to be the one to lodge the complaint, they need your IP. Which means it only really applies to torrents

    >> Anonymous 08/10/11(Wed)07:50 No.53154159
I don't understand why you're all flipping shit, you have dynamic IP addresses right? And DDL is always an option if you can't torrent

So you guys think I should just stop torrenting at midnight? I'm sure anime would be fine? I don't really dl movies or anything.

    >implying anything will change apart from a few half dozen unlucky cunts that get charged just so the government can turn around and say they are fighting piracy.

If anyone actually gets caught the first time, they can just look into how to mask their IP when downloading.

I don't think most ISPs will do anything but the bare minimum of enforcement, they don't want to lose their customers just because the government says so.

Torrenting anime as long as it isn't licensed in english and fansubed will be ok, theres like a 1% chance they will do anything about it
    >> Anonymous 08/10/11(Wed)07:55 No.53154306
I bet the ones who will be caught are the stupid fucking kids who download the big 3 and their parents will be fined for it.

    >>53154207
thats the brilliant thing, they dont need to tell anyone whats in those logs

so the ISPs could literally tell the copyright holders that every report they submit is against a different person, even though the IPs are the same

Just don't torrent licensed anime. Fansubs are okay, and a lot of fansub groups offer DDL anyways. You'll all be fine.

also, what the fuck do you expect when we have a Jew as Prime Minister, one who used to be called the "smiling assasin" because of how ruthless he was at firing people.

But ofc, Phil Goth has shitall charisma, so national will proberly win again this year.

ill add onto this watch out for horriblesubs

crunchyroll has been sending out quite a few DMCAs to USA folks already and they dont even have a 3 strike enforcement

even though a lot of shit on crunchyroll is blocked in NZ i wouldnt be surprised if they can still issue DMCA on it (or at least get away with it)
