I was a scanlator back when AQS was still scanlating Mahou Sensei Negima, and I have to ask this: Why are so many scanlators today attention-whoring drama queens who cry whenever somebody uploads their scanlation somewhere else, questions a translation, asks for something, or is wondering why a series is weeks late. Look at Woxxy and that streaming manga attention whoring bullshit. Or the attention whoring of some RAW providers today. Back when I was scanlating, people did it for the fans and the community. Not for the e-peen and internet fame.

I guess I can jump in for a few questions.

    >>52495743
I've been studying upwards of four years now, and I still don't know everything. Translating manga is such a wonderful way to learn Japanese, though; I learn something new every chapter.

It took me about 6 months of studying kana, a little kanji here and there, before I was able to start translating.

Most of the stuff I've scanlated are requests from /a/ or /u/. Anything else are things that I found interesting while reading through magazines I bought for other series. Pic related; it's Femme Fatale.

Sage for disapproving of your (and my) attention whoring at this moment.

I have several questions, as I know almost nothing about the process, and ultimately, would like to get involved with it. What sort of programs would I need, and what jobs would someone who can't read moonrunes accomplish. Also, what stages of the process are the most time consuming. And last, but not least, could 1 person pick up a series, have /a/ translate it, and actually put a dent in it, or would it be a waste of time?

I don't know much moon, but my translators all took from 3-7 years to learn to moon. As for what makes me pick manga, it's really dependent on what I'm in the mood for, but I like older manga best, especially ones with delinquents.

    >>52495757

I feel, that when a person picks up a manga, they feel it's theirs from that moment onward. So when anyone insults it, post it on other websites, etc. They feel they have been wrong. Of course it could also be because they want people to go to their site to get ad revenue or something to be get money. It could be a number of reasons, but those are the first two that come to my head.

You can't read moonrunes? You can do a ton of shit:
Cleaning - taking the raw scans, making them look nice, then erasing the Japanese text. I classify cleaning into two steps; one step for making the scans look nice and white, and another step for removing text.

Typesetting - putting the text on the page. I have a lot of fun with this sometimes; getting to use different fonts and putting words in different formations is awesome.

Proofreading - the idiot's job. Basically just making sure every bubble is filled with the right text, checking for spelling and grammar errors, and fixing sentences that could sound nicer. Even translators born in the states make derby errors.

I do everything from scanning to typesetting, and I use:
Photoshop CS2 (for scanning, cleaning, typesetting)
    Notepad (for translations)

Your last question - yes. Hox has been doing a lot of stuff. I'd mention myself, but I haven't been very active on /a/ lately (or in general).

    Well it goes like this:

    1. Scan the manga
    2. Translator translates it
    3. Cleaner Cleans it
    4. Editor/Typesetter typesets it
    5. Quality Checking commences
    6. It is complete.

It's all a matter of opinion of which is most difficult, but for me it's typesetting. It's such a bother. Anyways, for programs, Photoshop is a must.

Honestly, doing a popular series is more trouble than it's worth. I did a popular shoujo series for two years, and the fanbase is absolutely nauseating. Much better to do lesser-known series, take your time and do a good job, and contribute to the community, rather than try to suck a fanbase's cock.

    1. e-peen
    2. A large number of translators (especially the more talented and creative ones) choose projects because we are interested in translating them, rather than because we feel that we have some sort of duty to the community. I personally translate things because I like translating; I do not give a fuck about who, if anybody, ends up reading them. I went to school for translation, I am a straight-up translation nerd (the same way you have geology nerds or physics nerds), and that's why I do it.

It's not like I'm looking for site traffic or to make money, anyways. I just want to allow other people to be able to read the series I like, too. And giving back to the community I've leeched off of for several years is always nice.

    >>52496338
I have no idea. I assume it's because people are doing it more for the e-peen now, instead of for the fans. They get jelly when other groups take 'their' project, or when rival group is getting more pageview than them. What losers.

We tried picking up a shoujo series once when it was first announced, and some other group pounced all over us, telling us to back off. Guess what happened three months later? They dropped it. And guess who's going to be translating it now?

    Breaking it down into parts:
    Translation: 30min - 1 hour
    Cleaning (1): 1 hour
    Cleaning (2): 2 hours
    Typesetting: 1-2 hours
    Total: 4-6 hours.

I can churn out a 20-page ecchi in 3-4 hours due to ease of translation and typesetting, but a 50-page seinen with lots of handwritten text on the sides can take me upwards of 8 hours.

When I was first starting out, it took me about 16 hours to do a chapter, as I wasn't as speedy with cleaning and typesetting yet.

Maybe people were bugging the shit out of him or just wants to make a mark to show it's his translation and such. Either way it's pretty dumb. As for why TL notes/TL pages don't appear more often, it's because it's dependent on the group and the manga. Some manga don't require many TL notes or those that do, the group is too lazy to include.

    >>52496299

No, but apparently some groups do make money doing this, which isn't right since this process is pretty fucked.

    >>52496338

I wouldn't know really but I guess most of them feel entitled to something when they do this, like if we owe them for working on random manga. This is wrong of course, since all they did was translate it.

Gekiman, a new manga by Go Nagai. It was one of the longest most boring shit to ever work on and then the typesetter up and decided to be one of the biggest egotistical assholes I had met up at that point and tried to argue my translator was wrong. I thankfully dropped out of that project but fuck it was long and in the end nothing got done.

    >>52496489

Some people who scanlated have moved on to translate for actual companies. However, scanlation is more of a fan kind of thing, not something of a business. We're translating the mangas because we want to see them translated and want other people to read it. It's not a business, more of a way of sharing.

Handwritten takes longer usually due to sloppy handwriting. I can't tell you the amount of times I've been stumped on an ambiguous kanji written in extremely shitty handwriting. I've been getting better at it in the last year or so, though, mostly because of how much I've been practicing writing kanji instead of just reading it.

The hard part about tons of handwritten text over images is photoshopping them out. Sometimes I'll just be lazy, typeset over it, and then photoshop what's visible behind the text.

    >>52496675
I'll put in translator's notes to the side of the image if it's short and will fit. If I have to do more than two or three notes in a chapter, though, I'll put in an asterik and a translator's page.

When we did a few chapters of Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, translator's pages EVERYWHERE

Ah, because it's better to put it on the page it happens. Say for example someone makes a volume batch, the TL Page comes up and it says "On page 23, blah blah blah" and you go back to it and it's not the actual note.

Some groups do pages, but the note on the actual page is preferred.

if the English version of j-comi ever happens, that could be the future. least from the way akamatsu was talking.

are the more experienced moonspeakers moving on to paid translation jobs and ditching the scanlation work?

    Why isn't anyone scanlating this?

Because it looks like a fucking two year old decided to scanlate. It's up there with not centering text and putting in GTO color boxes.

IIRC, the two guys translating Negima were both former members of a scanslator group. Thou now they bitch how scanslations are supposedly 'denying them money', cause Kodansha is paying them dick for their work.

Its a really good shoujo manga, but the translators take at least like 3 months before translating a new chapter so I am requesting even though you said not to. Would be really nice though reading the rest of the story because I have never read anything like it.

I would very much like to see this happen. Is j-comi up and running already? I remember reading about it last year, but then never heard much about it after that.

I don't know. Mostly because the translation interface is different.

By that I mean, for manga, I usually pop open Notepad and type for an hour. I don't know if it's done differently for VNs / hentai games, especially with multiple routes and whatnot.

    >>52496885
Because people who want to translate shit are few and far between. There are plenty of moonspeakers who just don't want to put the time in to translate a chapter. It can be quite easy, but so is going grocery shopping and doing your laundry, and we all have days when we don't want to do that, right?

Then there's also the problem of group drama and translators not wanting to translate things anymore, or translators being commissioned for series they hate. People are always looking for translators.

As much of a hassle translating can be, I'm kind of glad I'm a translator so I don't have to deal with the not-having-a-translator bullshit.

Oh dear. I forgot to sage and bumped the thread...

    >>52496885

Because translators are the hardest to find in the scanlation world. And it's mostly because translators are wanted for everything from anime, to visual novels, etc. etc.

    >>52496900

Lack of interest or no one wants to work on it. If you want to see it done, try showing it other groups and see if any are interested in possibly picking it up.

Well, the attention-whoring gentleman who began the thread doesn't take requests, but ever since I started translating on /a/ in 2008, I've taken requests.

    Also,

usually screams "easy translation". I'll take a look at the mangaupdates page and see if I can do anything for you, good sir.

    >>52497000
No. I don't really know why I should hate them. I just focus on translating. Couldn't care about who hosts as long as there's credit somewhere.
