Nanami is give so much time to tell you something important about the plot, actually. She's the only character who actually grew up in the process, that means something. You could say that Utena tries to pretend everything makes sense when it obviously doesn't, and ends up in the very center of the clusterfuck, while Nanami goes through the silliest of symbols and ends up mostly not present in the world(making tea to eh men, kids forever).

Nanami isn't present in the manga and is a joke in the movie(while there is still the painting of her in the duelist uniform, which many people tend to forget) but not really in the school or in the plot, so most people would guess she's 'out' already as well.

The whole Nanami is in the series because she has her place there, you need someone like her to tell something about the REAL growing up too.

Do note that Nanami's second duel is one of the saddest parts of the thing.

Because, while every single duel you lose forces you to grow up a bit, and if you lose a lot of times you will just start disappearing, she is most outright and explicitely forced to realize, that the correct way to get out of kiddyness isn't to drive your ambitons beyond the limit, it's to walk the fuck away.

Ruka might have actually died, he propably did, and you didn't get that much of it with Mikage, because he lost so many times that he was just told gtfo, so Nanami is the only one where you really, really see it.

Well, the first one was a real troll, but also obviously the duel that was put the most time and thought of from all the S1 duels, so it flows awesomely with an awesome song and the Anthy comes, and trolls Jury further.

In the first duel you can say she lost a dumb bet to make, and in the second it's obvious why she lost, but the movie one just sucks for her. Jury is, at the very least, made to appear as the very best fencer in the school, so that Utena can't beat her in normal circumastances, she even blocks Utena's infamous haxstab(pic related). But in the movie, it looks to the whole school like them fencing for five minutes, talking for a bit, then Utena just comes and stabs the rose off.
