90 KB Final Shuttle Launch - History Being Made Anonymous 07/08/11(Fri)10:59 No.51670382
It's time for Science, one last time. Get in here, /a/. We're at T-Minus 18:20. This is the last time a shuttle will ever fly. Fuck nationality and individual pride, these things were testaments to all of Man. Gather 'round, and watch as we reach a new, strange age of Space Exploration.

Russian Soyuz will be ferrying USA Astronauts until a private space company (Probably SpaceX) develops a capsule for use by NASA. ETA is roughly 2015 for such a craft.

Good riddance to the shuttle. It put some interesting things in orbit, but for the most part it's just been sucking NASA's dwindling budget dry for the last 30 years. My only hope is that the retards in Washington will stop changing NASA's mission every four years so we can get beyond LEO again.

True facts. It was a horribly compromised design-by-committee mess that achieved none of the things it was supposed to, other than (eventually) building the ISS, which is also retarded.

It's still a little sad to see it go being that it's being replaced with "lol I guess we'll hitch a ride on Soyuz", though. If that Brown university report that the post-9/11 wars have cost about 4 TRILLION dollars is anything close to the truth, we could surely have a permanent lunar base and have done a manned Mars landing by now, if only the will was there.

Depends on how deep the shuttle mission is, such as the shuttle mission to repair the Hubble didn't separate it's tank for a long time. Not every eternal tank has reentered the atmosphere

So I was waiting for this all morning with nothing else to do until about 11:15 at which point it was made clear to me that I had been remiss in my duties in reading the minds of the people who had things for me to do but could not be bothered to tell me. They further impressed upon me the urgency of the tasks at hand, leading me to do a half hour of work and ultimately missing the one thing I had wanted to see today: seeing the last shuttle launch live.

One more end of an era to chalk up under "Missed for stupid shit".

Chinese PHD's are rife with plagiarism and other poor academic practice. Sauce on your estimates for Chinese R&D stats?

Sage for general Chinese and not cartoons.

Space Shuttles are just what we call those particular reusable rockets. We're developing other rockets with higher payload potential (that could possibly pave the way for colonisation or terraforming), but in the meantime, I think American astronauts will be piggybacking with the Russians.

Good old-fashioned heavy lift rockets. They work and can be made somewhat safe via launch escape systems. Maybe scaled dynamics rocket plane things for LEO.

we'll be evolved to the point where we can shed our corporeal and travel space as pure energy
