Well, the draconian anime and manga law in Tokyo took place today. Whether or not it will be repealed is unknown. I hope Ishihara is happy.

No signs of this even coming close to happening. Ishihara's motto of "Rule Tokyo, Rule Japan" is in full charge and the banhammer has already started swinging.

The bill has already shut down several dozen different manga series and caused delays in the release of other series as they had to be relabelled and modified to fit the terms of the bill. Not to mention how the cultural anime fest had half its entries pulled out. Seems to be affecting things to me.

Then they need to find a way around it. I'm sure the bill has a loophole. This basically kills an entire industry and thousands of people will be out of a job.

Maybe we should have them relocate to California. Our economy is in the toilet. We could use a boost.

I'm pretty sure this kicked in June 1st.

Not that it really matters. It may have an impact on some of the more out there shounen titles, but not any of the stuff that is popular around here. (except perhaps berserk and kiss x sis)

It won't really have any effect on anime. All of that shit is already regulated pretty heavily by broadcast stations, that crazy fog stuff that wants you to buy the BDs, and the ever-present threat of the PTA.

companies are law-abiding, yakuza aren't, besides the bill is self policed, that means you're not being watched by the police but by other companies and media watchdogs, if you instate a media riot your company is absolutely fucked so everyone is self-censoring their works.

The easiest way around to bill is to fulfill everything Ishihara wants. Anyone who thinks relocating is a good idea is a total derp. And no, this won't kill thousands of jobs outside of the couple dozen mangaka who had their serializations cancelled, it simply changes the content served.

The bill won't affect anime too much, or at least no one is going to really notice the lack of anything other than maybe a few more SOL shows.

It's the manga and visual novel industry which are the hardest hit by the bill, especially since several magazines have decided to go out of print.

The "adults only" sticker isn't as shameful over there as it is here, and it's not like the stuff with tits in it is really going to suffer when the demographic that consumes 98% of it are otaku that really don't give a fuck about society at large.
Yosuga no Sora did just fine and it had the same rating as porn both when it aired on television and when it was sold in stores.

Stuff that might be targeted is the stuff that wades pretty deeply into the taboo (like incest) or stuff that's exceedingly violent (like guts or berserk).

Remember that this isn't America we're talking about here. They have a higher tolerance when it comes to sexual themes and a lower tolerance when it comes to violence.

In general media controversy garners interest, which may lead to sales for those interested in the actual subject but the ban is general and doesn't focus on any individual series. This won't generate interest in anything, it'll simply cause several series to be cancelled and impede the creation of certain types of series. Japan is also different, due to the stipulations of the bill, media controversy would absolutely destroy a series since heavy fines would be enacted, which certainly wouldn't be beneficial in any way.

Then there's a direct correlation between the ban and the manga cancellations, and your definition of explicit must be quite vast because some of the titles' infractions were relatively tame, such as mentioning offscreen sex between highschoolers.

    Calm yourself, butthurt otaku.

First off, it only affects porn and hentai. People need to stop panicking and thinking this is the end of Anime as we know it.

Secondly, law only affects Tokyo. Anime and Manga are a multibillion dollar industry. If there's enough demand for girls liking rape or underaged sex in anime, they'll relocate to other cities if necessary. You can count on companies to do whatever they think is going to make them money. They won't just sit in Tokyo and pout.

Thirdly, Manga will be largely unaffected. Mangaka can live anywhere they want and mail their submission to publishers. And publishers can simply relocate to, or open branch offices in, cities that don't have such retarded rules.

And finally, all they have to do to bypass the law entirely is admit their underage-girl-enjoying-being-raped story is porn and label it as such.

It's not like any of you fucks buy manga or anime anyway. You read manga on fansub sites and torrent the anime. So quit bitching.

Tokyo is the hotbed of the anime and manga industry, every company in tokyo is affected, that's more than 90% of the industry, the only ones not affected are the small ten percent outside of tokyo, in short 90% of all anime and manga in japan is affected by the new law. If you really think anything about relocating is anything but akin to corporate suicide you derped hard.

Its sad what sensationalism does, a book can be about a criminal but no way does it cause people to commit crimes or glorify crimes just because it has a criminal in it.

because you see a gun doesn't mean you go on a rampage and kill people.

I think stephen frys word are best for this kind of situation:

"Well you hear people say "some people get affected by what they see and hear", you should answer "do you? do you commit crimes because you see them or hear about them? and these 'other people' do you know them? have you ever met them?""

Tsutomu Miyazaki (宮﨑 勤 Miyazaki Tsutomu?, August 21, 1962 – June 17, 2008), also known as The Otaku Murderer, The Little Girl Murderer, and Dracula, was a Japanese serial killer.

Between 1988 and 1989, Miyazaki mutilated and killed four girls, aged between four and seven, and sexually molested their corpses. He drank the blood of one victim and ate a part of her hand. These crimes—which, prior to Miyazaki's apprehension and trial were named "The Little Girl Murders", and later known as the Tokyo/Saitama Serial Kidnapping Murders of Little Girls (東京・埼玉連続幼女誘拐殺人事件 Tōkyō Saitama renzoku yōjo yūkai satsujin jiken?)—shocked Saitama Prefecture, which had few crimes against children.

    >The media soon came to call him "The Otaku Murderer". His killings fueled a moral panic against otaku, accusing anime and horror films of making him a murderer. However these reports were disputed: in Eiji Otsuka's book on the crime, he argued that Miyazaki's collection of pornography was probably added or amended by a photographer in order to highlight his perversity. Another critic, Fumiya Ichihashi, suspected the released information was playing up to public stereotypes and fears about otaku, as the police knew they would help cement a conviction.

People who say the Bill affects only porn or affects everything that isn't porn are wrong.

The Bill is a bit more encompassing than that, it will primarily affect non-porn material (that aren't novels) but at the same time bans several hentai elements.

For one thing, no more highschoolers being depicted having sex, no more loli (which has been banned in animated hentai since the 1980s). People who think companies will ignore around this are retarded, feminists managed to ban nekomimi porn on the grounds of bestiality and that has fucking stuck hard, companies will simply resort to doing what they have, doing exactly what the bill stipulates lest they get fined.

Lots of hentai ovas are based off of doujiin work so this'll limit the kinds of things we get adapted, what kinds of people go commercial, get fullblown serializations and whatnot.

I´m okay with the ban. It basically says that adult content should not be in manga/anime for kids. As far as that concerns sexual stuff (loli, rape, incest) it is mostly ok. It seems that homolust is also going to be banned. Well, that sucks, because even if myself I´m straight i think it goes too far. Faggots are people, too.

The only "problem" I see is that it might lead to less graphic violence in shonenshit. So no more ripping arms off, Kubo. BAAAAAAAWWW.

yeah, that's why people are hung up over the ban, because it's incredibly vague enough to include definitions like these. It used to be more specific but was shot down, then they came back made it vaguer and then passed, now it's another effective tool for enacting legal retribution whenever anything makes any sort of storm since there are so many more available legal landmines to trip over.

For all of you talking about how this won't affect "moe", you're missing a huge piece of information. The letter of the law is incredibly vague, so much so, that it could be interpreted as banning anything underage that people could be remotely attracted to. Say goodbye to anything set in a High School.

Also, there's no strict guidelines concerning what really can or can't be banned. Studios could easily donate money to politicians to lobby for their competitor's works to be banned. Say goodbye to quality animation, because their entire budget will now go to paying off politicians.
