I've been told by 3 labs that they didn't want to hire me because I would get a teaching job and quit. The DoE has had a hiring freeze for 2 years and is now grandfathering out half the teaching staff to accommodate more tax cuts. former classroom size limits were repealed in a midnight state congressional session to make it all legal.

College isn't to blame. It's your lack of initiative. And no degree will replace persistence and motivation. Better to put more work in job hunting than it is to whine about something you haven't worked hard enough for.
