I'm not familiar with the source material but the show seemed a little bit bland, and very light on characterization. There was so much whisper-talking and similar appearances that I couldn't really tell characters apart aside from Boromir and the creepy blone duo, and I didn't actually manage to catch anybodies name.

I started reading the series like 10 years ago, I've re-read it almost as many times as Wheel of Time (4 times and 7 times, respectively). They are my two favorite series. Song of Ice and Fire tends to be a bit more edgy deep, but it does it in a way that is enjoyable and not fucking annoying. To give you an idea of where that line is, I would say Sword of Truth is very close to that line for me. It was -almost- annoying for me at times during the moralist speeches Richard gave, but it just barely stayed above the line.
