Gintama for the most part isn't a serious shounen like Bleach, Naruto and One Piece.

It's more a comedy/parody than anything. There's no real plot or goal. But it does have the occasional serious arc that is totally awesome.

I watched Fumoffu and loved it and haven't watched the parent series. Granted, I didn't watched it on purpose, it was airing on my local animax, but still.

I see your point thou, and agree wholeheartedly. I just started watching Gintama a couple of weeks ago, and it slowly builds up itself to where the funny episodes become funnier when you know the characters personalities, and because of all the humor, when a serious arc is thrown in, it's enjoyed even more that way.

Not trying to be pretentious here, but it's more of an experience as a whole than just watching an anime.

Gintama is the longest running series I can still actually enjoy following. Also they did a parody of the second longest running last week.

There are actually very few jokes related to those three series for the most part. The first batch of episodes has the majority of them and even then it's not even close to being the majority of the humor, the other like 180 episodes barely ever mention them.

Almost everything in Gintama is manzai and then second place to that is references, not to just shounen shit but just about every anime possible along with just about every cultural thing you can think of.
