Hiromi explained, “…the fans were upset at the quality of animation, but it was completely intentional on the part of Imaishi (series director). He wanted to parody the common occurance, in many productions of the past, to have huge dips in quality during the course of a shows tv production.” That is a great tidbit to know!

I assumed it had to be intentional, because a studio like Gainax could have easily executed Episode 4 just as the rest.

the other Pixar guy mentions only a bunch of old works that most of the people in those photos weren't even involved with, so technically the first guy is actually a little more accurate in the shows he listed. That's the point. Kobayashi appears to follow a strict stylistic formula to whatever it is he's working on, and for such a cleanly composed series as TTGL, his presence is necessary for the effect Wakabayashi claimed they worked for. And it worked really well.

yeah but I recall Takami Akai back in 2007 defending that episode by saying that it was actually well animated, not that the people didn't realize that it was meant to be "intentionally bad".

and considering it had people like Seiya Numata working on it, it makes more sense.

I would think he was talking to the average guy who watched the episode, not the really die-hard animation fans. And he was presumably pissed off then, too.

I feel that it was roughly a similar situation as to what happened in the past when animators tried to change things up only to be met with severe criticisms. The Kobayashi ep would have worked better with episode 6, really, rather than an important episode like 4 was.

And in addition, the Kobayashi ep was just so jarring to normal viewers that they reacted like that. Kobayashi's ep on PSG actually didn't gain that much criticism, and it's mostly due to the experimental flavor of the show.
    >> diebuster 03/04/11(Fri)13:26 No.46670182
    >>46670116
yes but why would he be pissed off if, as Wakabayshi said, the episode was intentionally terrible? Why would they hire talented people like Seiya Numata specifically to do animation for episode 4, which, according to him, was very poorly animated on purpose?
    >> diebuster 03/04/11(Fri)13:36 No.46670435
    >>46670182
    >>46670116
basically I have trouble imagining Imaishi approaching Kobayashi and telling him "hey I need someone with a horrible, shitty and unlikable style that looks like the team ran out of budget and hired a mongoloid child to direct a Gurren episode for me, and well... :)"
    >> Anonymous 03/04/11(Fri)13:42 No.46670597
    >>46670182
    >>46670435

I guess we have to take what they're both saying with a grain of salt. Hiring Kobayashi himself, to me, is already some kind of a hint as to what the staff wanted with the episode, but I don't think Imaishi necessarily told him to "do a shitty job" but more like to "do the episode his way". While Akai seems like he was merely defending the choices Gainax made.

Numata seems like a casting choice made according to his personal style. He would be a good fit for the Kobayashi ep. And hell, even Hisashi Mori was on episode 4, iirc.
    >> Anonymous 03/04/11(Fri)13:44 No.46670662

    >I don't think Imaishi necessarily told him to "do a shitty job" but more like to "do the episode his way"
well see, ep 4 was very Kobayashi-style. if Imaishi's intention was to make the episode look like shit, then by bringing in Kobayashi he was indirectly calling his friend's style a steaming pile of rat corpses smeared in toxic feces... and I find that very hard to believe since Imaishi loves weird shit like that. Remember how Big Building was his favorite Parallel Works 2 short?

Gainax employees are known for making shit up on the spot to westerners anyway... Hiroyuki Yamaga has given two totally different answers to the same question during the very same Q&A session. So I'll just go with the explanation that seems more logical.
    >> Anonymous 03/04/11(Fri)13:52 No.46670849
    >>46670734
Now that's where I say Wakabayashi wasn't exactly telling the truth, which is why I said their statements should be taken with a grain of salt. Imaishi and Kobayashi are friends, and they know each of their styles, and Imaishi liking oddball stuff only adds to that.

And yeah, I won't really take whatever they say at face value.

It's also really dumb because Imaishi and Kobayashi are still friends, as evidenced by Kobayashi being in PanSto. I'm sure something got misintepreted or lost in translation. Maybe the idea was to deliberatedly get a style switch and whoever was writing the article understood that as "deliberatedly bad" instead of just a style switch.

Howdy /a/, my name is Hiromi Wakabayashi.

I'm a 27 year old Japanese Toonaholic (Cartoon fan for you foreigners). I draw cartoons and comics on my tablet, and spend my days perfecting my art and playing superior American games. (Halo, Gears of War, Call of Duty)

I train with my 1911 every day, this superior weapon can shoot straight through steel because it kicks ass, and is vastly superior to any other weapon on earth. I earned my gun license two years ago, and I have been getting better every day.

I speak English fluently, both the Midwestern and the East Coast accents, and I write fluently as well. I know everything about American history and their Constitution, which I follow 100%

When I get my American visa, I am moving to New York to attend a prestigious High School to learn more about their magnificent culture. I hope I can become an animator for Nickelodeon or a game designer!

I own several cowboy outfits, which I wear around town. I want to get used to wearing them before I move to America, so I can fit in easier. I keep cool to my elders and seniors and speak English as often as I can, but rarely does anyone manage to respond.

    Wish me luck in America!
