We're going to take a look at--

I wanted to draw General Winter after seeing Naka-san's popular Japan-chan site. Russia has been saved by General Winter many times in the past, hasn't he? But unfortunately he also ends up being attacked by him every year.

    "To your heart's content, Russia!"

Russia decided to build a waterway that would connect Leningrad with the White Sea. Since it was something that Stalin had thought of on a whim, true to the maxim: "Build it immediately within the next 2 years," or "Since there's no money, there's no materials or anything. Well, keep working," the final structure turned out positively Russian in quality.

And so, Russia did construction work. However, all that was available on site were wheelbarrows and shovels. In an era when cars were running through the streets and airplanes soared through the skies, they used wheelbarrows and shovels. Even though it was the 20th century, they were working on an ancient Egyptian level.

And the time span for completion was just one year.

Can you even build a canal, Russia!?

Amidst this ugly situation, Russia was somehow able to build a canal. However, it became clear that thanks to a mistake made by the designers, ships would not be able to pass through it. The canal they had worked so hard to build was completely useless.

That they did not notice this in the beginning is true to the Russian heart.

I'd like to get into this series. Was it just some manga that's spawned a lot of fanon and people mostly discuss that, or was it something else first?

It actually started as a webcomic (there's also an anime), but otherwise you're pretty much correct. The fanon far outweighs the source material in terms of both quantity and quality.

You can read the manga or watch the anime to get a general gist of what it's about, but most of the interesting art and whatnot is fan-made.

It started as a scribbly webcomic some guy would post strips of on his blog. The concept really caught on, the strips were adapted into a manga, the manga and strips were adapted into an anime, the anime had a movie come out recently, and there's going to be some video game later this year.

The strips can be read here-- http://aph.starry-sky.com/index.html

The main storyline focuses on WWII, but the extra strips and the manga are all over the place as far as time and location are concerned. They're actually where most of the countries outside of the Axis Powers get their screentime.

Started off as a webcomic and supplemented by some blog posts of the artist.

Then fujoshi shitstorm took off and jumped at the chance of adding to the character via history and tons of fanwank.

Personally, I think the webcomic and anime series is pretty shitty. Never made me laugh and, at best, I would find it cute. What I really like, however, is the fanart and those animation video's the japanese fujoshi push out. Really helped to flesh out the characters and make even the most detestable somewhat likeable.

This, the fanworks are really something. Since the concept isn't really restricted to just what the guy writes as canon, the sky's the limit.

I agree the anime is pretty shitty, although Funimation's dub is actually a pretty good adaptation IMO. The jokes from the strips tend to fall flat in anime-form, so all the liberals Funi took with the dub are an improvement even if they're completely straying from the source material.

Speaking of vids, here are some of my favorites. I don't go for the dancing or humor vids, but like the ones that give depth to the character and/or relationship.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9kVYNtCtYKY&feature=related - About the east asians. General. Water coloring and imploring everyone to fucking chill.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PsUhPk-AHnU - Russia centric, no pairings. Tragic background why russia's the yandere.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k2guy2U2ZPM&feature=related - Serious France/Joan of Arc, hetero couple. First vid that makes me not hate france.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M-_oXdRelX0&feature=related - One of the many USxUK vids. It doesn't place them as nations, but in an AU verse. Nice art.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8sY8yS444Lk&feature=related- Another USxUK, but with a splash of Japan in the mix. The person who made this is good in syncing music with the drawings.

Btw, does anyone happen to know this one video where it's basically a collaboration of many artist and they each have short cute stories set to instrumentals? It was HNNNNGH inducing. One was nordic centric and the other vid had UK with baby US at the end.
