It was the creator's intent. The show is designed children, but it has a big nostalgia target too; mid-20's people who grew up in the 80's and still love the cartoons from that era. It airs right after the remake of Strawberry Shortcake.

I watch it with my niece, but then again she loves this kinda stuff. I watch it even when she isn't around I like it, not everyone does. It gets spammed to death and people who might want to watch it get turned off by the idiots who try to force it onto people.

FiM is a good show and yes, the love for it is similar to the general reactions to slice-of-life series starring teenage girls. The thing is, though, is that FiM is, as said before, a GOOD SHOW. Many slice-of-life moeshit shows are the same thing over and over again, but FiM is aimed at little girls rather than twenty-something-year-old men. A recent comparison could be HeartCatch PreCure: it's aimed at selling toys to little girls, but it's fun for both kids and their parents.

HeartCatch and FiM also both involve eye-blinding colors and vaguely homoerotic friendships, though FiM's pairs are considerably weirder due to the cast consisting of ponies. Note: not saying that HeartCatch and FiM are exactly the same (big differences content-wise) but it's possibly the best thing to compare FiM to.

MLP is surprisingly enjoyable. It has good characters, character development, okay animation (some parts really good, some parts really shitty), and isn't beating you over the head with PLOT.

that said, I'm disappointed in the fanbase. Youtube streams acceptable? good god. and not all the episodes are available in HD, although it seems like they're working on that for the rest of the show.

depending on the special features, I might get the DVDs of this and keep them locked in a safe, never to see the light of day again.
