But I got that opinion on Berserk when I started it originally too.
Once you actually start getting further into it, it levels itself out a bit, and you realize it's not just dark for the sake of dark, but there's a realistic and intimate progression of events that leads the story to the point where it is quite grimdark.
Also, it's not really supposed to be the lighthearted fantasy adventure that Lodoss or Slayers is. It's more meant to be over the top gore and just plain gar as fuck.
Not for everyone though I guess.

Except for the severe case of PLOT HIJACK, the OVA was pretty cool.

Yeah. One problem with Berserk is that the tone isn't really too consistent. During the flashback arc, where it build Guts' character, the tone is somewhat lighthearted, as it builds the bonds of Guts' and Griffith's relationship. But once that arc ends, it (for good plot reasons) turns a lot darker.
Not to say it doesn't have some lighthearted and more stereotypical swords and sorcery style adventuring, it generally stays pretty brutal for a while (volume 13-28 or so)

Berserk isn't grimdark for the sake of mining 13-year-old's parents money for little plastic army men like Warhammer 40k is.
It's grim and dark because its whole theme is the theme of man vs fate.
Its pace plows along like everything is going according to a fated plan and no matter how hard the characters fight and struggle, they can't defeat the wheels of fate.
At least until the latest arc where they're traveling to Namek, er, Elfheim. But then, the release schedule is really fucking up the pacing more than anything.

It's the second part, which is prevalent in 40k in the storyline still. The whole universe is shit or the whole universe is fucked. I guess since I have gotten older and out of college, I can only find it a little silly. I just can't imagine a world being so dark.

Question for those who know about old anime. Were there anime with the long sideways ear like Deedlit and Priotess or were they the first one to have them?

Because I don't remember any other anime, manga or video game characters that had ears like that beforehand. Lodoss was the first one I saw with those kinds of ears on elves.
