You know back in my day we liked us some grimdark and excessive 80s-style violence in our japanimations.

ITT: Old school blood, gore and pretty much anything else that would have traumitized a young child watching anime late night in the 90s.

That's a naive to some extent

True many will look back fondly on the 00s as their formative years, but the truth of the matter is animation quality didn't really reach a level that can be appreciated by the modern eye until the 80s and even then it was dicey. Incidentally the mature anime movement of OVAs didn't really start until the 80s either. And the 80s were a time when anime really started to emerge in the Western mainstream if only modestly.

The 80s remains a time of mixed feelings for anime as many of its traits still bear those of the 70s and the 90s. None the less this is the point most oldschool fans find their starting ground for any number of reasons

50s-70s - Blossoming Generation: Anime emerges as a media-type akin to that of western cartoons following in the creative footsteps of a select few, growing as a genre through slow but progressive experimentation.

80s-90s - Media Boom Generation: 1. Emergence of mainstream anime as a mature story telling format with the VHS enabled boom of OVAs & Movies. 2. Heavy influence from popular Western media. 3. Increased focus on adapting materials other than manga to Anime.

00s - Low Cost Anime / Otaku centered Generation: 1. OVA format becomes largely irrelevant. 2. Lower cost of Anime allows more anime to be made into TV rather than OVAs & Movies resulting in a major shit in what source material gets adapted to anime and what can be shown. 3. The stagnation of the Anime industry near the end of the 90s and gradual disappearance of the mainstream audience due to the population freeze of the recession (which started in 1987) results in a time of over all drastic change and faltering creativity. Once popular genres start becoming financial disasters. Anime adapts to the niche pre-existing audience of older Otaku and becomes increasingly niche.

just because you can come up with a cherry picked list doesn't change the fact that OVAs have by an large gone to the wayside from what they once were in terms of OVA / TV ratio.

You simply don't understand the context.

If someone had said OVAs dissapeared altogether, you'd have an argument, but listing just a handful doesn't make a convincing argument in this case.

    Shigurui. Nuff said.

Anime, like most entertainment, is mostly geared towards what the audience wants to see. Remember Heavy Metal, Akira, that kind of old, bloody gritty style was in comics too. As the audience has gotten bigger (and more mainstream) they've moved away from it. They were catering to people who wanted to watch something violent. Now, there's more people who want to watch something animated with a better story or characters rather than stuff like Kite / Mezzo Forte. There's still specialty stuff (like I said, Shigurui) but the majority of it isn't going to be in that niche.

You are way off, namefag. I'm sure another thread will pop up soon so you can see how wrong you are. It's not that we expect people to recognize every anime series in existence or spend hours searching for something obscure.

Here's the reality: saucefags ask what something is without reading the filename. There's a manga image with the source right on the picture, and they ask what it is. They go into the "great gifs" threads where people are posting fight scenes from series that are usually shit-tier except for a few good animations, and ask for sauce. They ask where they should stream this from, why they can't get MPC to work, why their VLC won't take screenshots, etc.

It's not elitist to expect you not to be such a faggot. If you're looking for new stuff to watch, websites with series rankings are much better than sitting here for hours waiting for people to suggest something good. This place is mostly about the current season and what's popular rather than "good stuff you should watch." There are better places to find that if that's what you want. There are recommendations charts for people just getting started with anime.

What we are reacting to is not the one guy asking for sauce but the thousands of newfags being retards. Maybe if you weren't such a newfag, you'd understand.

Supposedly they tone it down because they want to be big hits in the US and they know that in the US they appreciate censorship or some BS like that.

    So true

Hard to believe it bombed so badly in Japan and was cut short as a result.

Meanwhile stuff like Gundam 00 gets endless funding thrown at it only to deliver a mediocre gundam rein visioning with a bad second season.

Also, I'm not too familiar with genre terms but is there a term for the style of show Gundam 00 tried to emulate as opposed to other gundams. The really pretty boys, androgynous super pilots and unrealistically voluptuous women seems so typical of more modern shows but I have no clue what term might go for it. Maybe nothing?

While Escaflowne did poorly in Japan, it was a grand success worldwide, and even outsold Gundam on VHS tape.

This was the reason the movie was made, since the VHS releases were incredibly successful.

In my opinion, it's a shame that the anime was closed in such a way with the rushed end. I feel that either they should have ended on a cliffhanger, only to move into a film which would conclude it properly, or the show would end the way it did, and got a sequel film where Hitomi returns to Gaea.
I never watched 00, but I had a feeling it would be bad since it was going back to the Gundam Wing styled pretty boys.

    She's Mutio

a genetically engineered bioweapon used in Zorndyke's war against humanity.

Her kind are used to pilot spider crab-like mechs. They can breathe to a limited extent outside of water and lack the appeal to speak though are intelligent enough to understand words.

A larger variant of her kind are the size of whales but are decidedly less human in all respects (except for their faces).

The Fist of the North Star OVA was so over the top with violence, it was almost comical. Almost. I could watch Rei slice people into cold cuts all day.

today's gore in anime doesn't really compare to the stuff from the 80's and 90's. in the old days it was literally in-your-face shock value. on top of that cell animation really added to the dirty feel to it.

gore in today's anime comes off as too clean. oftentimes they have to lower the contrast of gore scenes to have any effect on the audience.

The problem here is you never watched anything we're talking about, so you think the gore is the selling point of these anime when it's just the one feature that ties them all together. I'm sure there are people that like them just for the gore but what I do like is the atmosphere, when animu was about dark sci fi and the occult rather than awkward school kids.

Where was it implied that only gore and shock value matter?
He just said that the gore is different. Quit greentexting like that.
The thread is shitty enough as it is.
