Soup /a/. Anime newfag here thats interested in attending a con, but which one? I dont think there is any here in Ireland so somewhere in the UK would probably be where the closest one's are. Ive heard of a few held in London.
So what do people do at anime cons and what stuff is there to see, also how much are cons usually. I've heard of people saying that some cons are terrible where everyone just hates each other and there is fights non stop, somehow I cant imagine that. Is that true?

    General con discussion thread?

Anime cons are generally awful, and I wouldn't recommend it.

MCM Expo is the main one in London if you really want to go though.

If you want to go to a convention, don't go to an anime one. You can watch anime all you want, and you can go to as many conventions as you want, but don't bother with the anime conventions. You'll regret it if you do.
    >> Anonymous 11/29/10(Mon)17:01 No.42992026
From my experience in American anime cons, there are three types:

    1. Sausagefests full of anti-social fatasses shouting 4chan memes.

    2. Smaller cons filled with hyperactive teenage girls dressed as Hetalia characters.

    3. Balanced cons. These have a good variety of ages and slightly more females than males. It's pretty easy to find someone who you get along with at these. (if you're a shut-in, the gothish ones are most likely to accept you)

There's a convention in Belfast, NI called QCon. It's held every year around the end of July I think? & it's around £15 to get in. Never been though

MCM is shit, nobody good is ever there and its just a big dealers hall, no events except drawing and cosplay competition

I went to Kitacon last year, was pretty enjoyable with a higher age range than average and nice people. I would go again but I have no friends now because I ditched them, they are retards

For the record, type 2 is far, FAR preferable to type 1. Hyperactive fangirls at least keep the atmosphere lively.

the big UK cons outside London include Amecon / Ayacon (alternating years - next August will be Ayacon in Warwick) and Minami Con in Southampton (next March).

Expect a dealer's room with stands from the big distributors as well as smaller dealers, gaming and manga reading rooms, video programmes, panels for every subject imaginable and big party events (e.g. cosplay ball, quizzes, talent contests)

Thanks. I suppose one question I want to know is, will I actually have fun? I get this vision of me just walking around staring at things on my own and getting bored after an hour. Whats the general atmosphere and socialibility like?
    >> Anonymous 11/29/10(Mon)17:31 No.42992962
    >>42992569
People will mostly keep to themselves but just hit up the bar and go to things and you'll soon be talking to people

It's like clubbing for nerds, if you have even one friend with similar interests you might want to bring them if you think you might not be so outgoing. I personally talk to anyone and everyone, and go ahead with whatever. It's a weird experience having a load of people in costume sitting around drinking half the time but it's frighteningly normal. I think we British are just less excitable than the American fans, because I haven't seen the LOL YAOI PADDLEZ and assorted faggotry except at MCM

I know exactly what you mean. The trick is to take chances on starting conversations with people - you'll find cool people to hang around with soon enough. Wheel out those social skills - you get the reward for the effort you put in (cons are much more enjoyable with others than alone).

There are often even forums on convention websites where you can chat with fellow con-goers beforehand, to give you a head-start.

The atmosphere is usually great from my experience. Nobody hides their powerlevels - craziness and fun ensues.

There are lots and lots of Pokefags at cons. If you're versed in Pokemon, it's a very easy conversation starter. (Ditto has a new ability in BW that everyone seems to love talking about for some reason)

Ditto doesn't have to use Transform anymore. Now he does it automatically when you send him out.
    >> Anonymous 11/29/10(Mon)17:45 No.42993389
    >>42993287
So what, he does it every single time a new Pokemon comes out? That kinda sucks
    >> Anonymous 11/29/10(Mon)17:47 No.42993456
    >>42993389
No, just when you send him out. It basically just amounts to Ditto not getting punched in the face while wasting a turn Transforming (in other words, he's actually usable now).
