In
2001, while driving along a regularly quiet street, Kubo Tite found
himself at a loss. His manga, Zombie Powder, had just been cancelled,
and had been given less than a month to come up with new material before
being fired from the studio.
At a red light, deep in thought, he
was shaken by a nearby noise. As he stepped out of his car, he noticed
that his right rear view mirror was gone. Looking down, he saw the
broken mirror and next to it the culprit; a soccer ball with the Mexican
flag.
Moments later, a group of Latinos, dressed up in a white
soccer uniform, approach him and ask for the ball back. Unable to
communicate his frustration, Kubo picked up the ball and punctured it
with a pen. The group watch the Mexican flag slowly deflate, and charged
at Kubo in a rage.
At the same time across the street, a group
of kendo students were leaving their dojo after a hard day's work.
Immediately, they became aware of the commotion outside and took up
katanas to help out the poor young man.
The fight grew as several
high school students headed for home joined in. A group of hipsters,
taking advantage of the situation, pushed Kubo to the ground and took
off with his car.
The fight entered into a nearby laundry mat,
where the owner, in panic, began throwing all sorts of cleaning supplies
at the vandals. Kubo rushed inside the laundry mat in order to break
out of the fight and avoid any more pandemonium, but became engulfed in
the quarrel, and whilst looking for an emergency exit, he found himself
looking at a huge container of Bleach heading right for him. The bottle
hit right on the mark, and Kubo was knocked out.
Later that week, while in the hospital, Kubo called up his editor and said: "Hey. I think I got something you might like." |
