Hey... are we really that depressing? Are we really that weird? Is it a crime to love anime or SFX movies? Why should it be a reason to set us apart? If you're into playing tennis, that's just fine and dandy, but if you watch anime, you're weird? Why?! I quit! No more job-hunting for me! If otaku are going to be discriminated against, then so be it. I'm gonna become a total otaku! I'm gonna be not just an Otaku but the Otaku of otaku... Otaking!

    >Umeda is a self-confessed otaku, one of Japan’s growing legion of men obsessed with anime, comics, action figures, and videogames. And when Umeda claims otaku status, it’s no idle boast. “Here’s the real evidence,” he says, producing a certificate and ID that confirm his standing as “otaku elite.” He earned this rank by getting a very high score on a rigorous National Unified Otaku Certification Test last summer.

    tl;dr: you're small time, OP

a glorious piece of Otaku history. should be required watching.

I bet most of /a/ hasn't seen it, because it's too 1) old, 2) gainax, and 3) weeaboo

Living in a fictional world that has nothing to do with real life through the means of videos and magazines is warped and crazy.

Watching Sex and the City and reading the Vogue is not...

agreed, if you consider yourself in any way a fan of anime you MUST watch this.

bonus points for seeing it on vhs with yellow subs like a pro.

Looking back on this, i realize that being a weeaboo required devotion back then! I can't imagine being into anime without the power of the webbernets!

yeah, before the internet, nerds actually interacted with other people face to face.

    weird, isn't it?

Explanation for the social rejection of anime fans:

    1. Anime is usually a solitary hobby
    2. It therefore can be done by people with no social skills
    3. People with no social skills therefore make up a portion of hobbyists
    4. When people with no social skills interact with other people, they represent their hobby
    5. People are naturally bad at separating causation from coincidence and correlation
    6. Therefore they assume, even subconsciously that traits they noticed in the first anime fans they interacted with apply to them all.

Are they really the problem? Or is the bigger problem the inability of common people to dissociate one thing from another thing?

I hear this bullshit from people all the time.
"I can't watch that show because it reminds me of a bad boyfriend who loved it"
    and similarly,
"I don't like anime because one guy I met was really disgusting and loves anime"

It's something we should account for but that doesn't change the fact that it's fucking stupid and people should kick themselves when they realized they're caught in such a mental trap.

    >>42860820
worrying about either of those problems is pointless, there will always be weeaboos making us look bad, and there will always be normalfags stupidly thinking we're all like that.
    Feels Bad Man.

Otaku no Video is Legendary Tier
    >> Anonymous 11/26/10(Fri)03:18 No.42861086
    >>42860861
    So here's the question.

Do we, the somewhat normal anime fans, try and ignore the weeaboos and correct the misconceptions normalfags have as victims of their own psychology?

Or do we just sheepishly hide away and pretend that we're "normal" (which implies that having taste really changes whether you're normal or not in the first place) and if the subject ever comes up, hold our tongues and let them sound stupid?
    >> Anonymous 11/26/10(Fri)03:23 No.42861221
    >>42861086
while hiding your hobby is stifling, if one truly has a life beyond that it shouldn't be that much of a problem.

When talking to a normalfag and anime comes up i pretend to be a nostalgiafag and only acknowledge stuff that came on when I was a kid and develop it from there depending on their responses.

But yeah, if it comes up, talk about it, if not, then don't, trying to hide it seems wrong, and in my experience nobody ever had a problem with my liking anime.
