They fall under the 2nd infantry division, whose headquarters is right across the pond at Fort Lewis. Japan had something on the order of 1/19th the US industrial output. There was literally no way the US could have not won. Hell, you can extend that to the allies as a whole.

To the people that say we should just overwhelm North Korea: We tried doing that during the Korean Conflict. We were overwhelmed by Chinese soldiers.

I highly highly doubt they're going to just sit by while their ally is being attacked by American and South Korean troops. What we need to do is deploy all our defenses to repel the artillery fire. Evacuate all citizens from the immediate area, mount more troops along the border and get some anti-missile defense systems in place. We also have a pretty impressive ship that just so happens to be patrolling the area that we should also move a bit closer to South Korea, just in case they try something. It's fitted with technology capable of defending both itself and South Korea from being overwhelmed... That is, unless China decides it wants to play and gets involved.

As for my response to the whole thing I can't say I'm surprised. Just when we're trying to end this war in the middle east we seem to be drawing towards another one in Asia.
