We had a livestream of the production team answering fan questions a week ago and it was mentioned (multiple times) this was a project entirely dedicated to "making what they wanted" and doing it how they wanted, although they almost got axed for refusing to censor some of the episodes.

Fuji TV cancelled Rurouni Kenshin TV due to poor ratings during its filler hell run. DEEN wanted to adapt it all the way through--even going so far as to include Tomoe in one of the EDs--but the ratings slump killed it.
