it all comes down to animefags being animefags, no one has really changed, we simply have a broader fanbase now, and as such, there are some people that are "less-obsessive" about anime, or have only seen the stuff on tv. But weren't you all that same way at one time?

    Exactly.

The people new to the hobby who are serious about it should learn from the people who have been around longer, watch a lot of the classic stuff then branch on to their own stuff.

At the very least if they aren't going to do this they should at least realize that the hobby has been around a lot longer than them and most of the shit they think is new and original isn't. I'm so tired of hearing about how Love Hina/Ranma/Eva started everything.

actually, I meant it more in the sense of Otaku no Video being a (albeit fictionalized) documentary of otaku culture in the 80's and a history of the creation of what today is one of the more well-known and influential animation studios - by watching it, you actually increase what you know about anime, instead of measuring your knowledge in the form of an "obscure anime checklist" penis size competition

There are actually quite a few different productions that only happened because of overseas support.

Furthermore if things hadn't been brought over in the early days stuff wouldn't have ended up on TV and most of the current fans wouldn't even know what this shit is. There would be no overnight fansubs or any of the shit that you guys have become used to.

Well, there were subs back in The Day. I was watching fourth-generation VHS tapes of Kimagure Orange Road fansubs back in 1990.

I do agree that the current anime scene would look vastly different without the early localizations; it still strikes me as unbelievable that it is a given that every single show of a season will be subbed by some group. Appreciate what you have, guys: it's fucking amazing.

If you want to go back far enough I really doubt the guys who subbed your old KOR tapes would have done that if they hadn't watched Kimba/Battle of the Planets/Starblazers/etc.

I mean granted there would probably be some sort of underground fandom in the US if there hadn't been people bringing this shit over, I really doubt it would have grown much without some exposure.

Eventually people get sick of specific people shitting up every thread they show up in, and create images that illustrate to newcomers exactly why to not respond to the retard.

But back on topic, I must say that I like the overall look and feel of 80s and early 90s anime. It's not as slick and shiny. Part of this might stem from my great distaste for the chipmunk look that seems so common in modern moe (and as somebody pointed out with the Hummingbird picture, moe is hardly a new phenomenon though slice-of-life moeblobs seem to be far more common than in previous decades), but whatever.

Of course, that might just be because that's what I first experienced. Japan seems to be in love with 70s anime nostalgia (which I simply do not understand), but to me, the 80s look of Macross and Megazone 23 and Kimagure Orange Road will forever be the best style.

more shows does not equal more variety

when people say there was more variety in the 90's, they are referring to variety of subject matter, variety of visual style, etc

a harem about an all female aerobatics squadron in the JDF
    mockumentary history of gainax
    female power suit wrestling
    idol singer jet pilots
    magical girl mecha fantasy
a time traveller who has to stop a young man who turns into a playboy when he's around women from overpopulating the world of the future

I'm not saying that some contemporary anime don't have interesting premises, but there's a glut of things like bad VN adaptations and SoL yonkoma adaptations that are making things stale. I love Strike Witches precisely because its weirdness reminds me of what anime was like two decades ago

Except if you knew anything you would know that many of those OVAs are hentai or supplementary OVAs to ongoing series. And of those that aren't, only a few of them are more than a couple episodes long--episodes that were typically released in between several weeks, months, or years in between each other . And it's not like there's not OVAs/Movies now. Even with consideration of OVAs, that does not make up for the huge difference of anime.

I don't know about the Winter season, but let's take a look at this one.
There is mecha (Star Driver), there is superhero stuff (Iron Man), there is cute anime (Squid Girl), there is more serious anime (Yakumo) and there is Sora no Otoshimono (whatever in the fuck the anime tries to be).
    There are things for everyone.

The complaint here seems mostly to be: "The majority of anime made nowadays is not mecha"
Actually, most of the times, this kind of thread has someone complaining that mecha is not dominating anymore.

And nowadays we get to see the daily life of a Japanese college student who's capable of seeing micro-organisms.

Again, I disagree about greater variety. Anime back then had variety, but it still has nowadays. We get certainly more of the same in certain genres since the whole industry has grown, but other than that we still get pretty much the same amount of quality shows.

only one of the shows (Rayearth)I listed in >>42089222 could really be described as mecha (and if you've seen it, the mechs only show up late in the show), maybe a couple others would be considered to have mecha elements because of the planes

My argument about variety has nothing to do with something for everyone genre-appeal, it has to do with things feeling fresh. The 80's and 90's saw a large number of new ideas in anime and a lot more original works; one of the results of the post-evangelion boom was a lot of things being made as anime just because anime had started to become more popular as a medium, many of which were adaptations that added very little to the innovation in the medium as a whole.

like what? I love magical girl stuff, but I didn't really like it very much back then. All I watched in the 90's was Rayearth, Sailor Moon, Pretty Sammy. I also know about the Pierrot stuff, as they pretty much built their reputation on it, but outside of that I'm pretty ignorant as to old mahou shoujo stuff.

    >it was never meant to be the spotlight of the industry
Nothing was ever "meant" to be anything. There is no authority for anime who tells what is supposed to be present and what's not.

It's undeniable that lots of people got into anime because of the cute girls. If you ask people what they think when they hear anime, they will always tell you something about "school girls with huge eyes", that was the definitive element, and that certainly already hints in the direction of "moe".
Anime which didn't contain any of that were always the exceptions, which fans would try to show others that it wasn't all about cute girls. But to claim that cute girls weren't a huge factor when it came to the appeal of anime is nonsense.

Sailor Moon was what got me into anime. And I sure as hell didn't watch it for the monster of the week.

    Our freedom!

No matter what the communists or nazis do to trample upon those rights Polish men and women will fight on the streets, fight from within and fight from outside until their freedom is restored.

Let's not even get into the fact that I don't think anyone here knows what true moe is.

The term moe was severely corrupted over the course of the years to it's current state. it used to refer to characters you had a strong connection to (and not in a sexual way).

Like a character would represent a little sister character you wanted to protect, or look out for. That kind of thing.

The last time moe was done "correctly" was the Casshern Sins.

Sadly, there are some that would still pervert moe, even when the character is presented properly.

    >but any chosen objective metric is inherently subjective

Not to be rude, That's what people with bad taste usually spout off, but in a usually less articulate way.

"hurr just because my taste is different than yours doesn't mean it's shit!"

Actually timmy yes, your taste is shit. Go learn a damn thing or two and get back to us.

Yes, I got that. Thank you. But the problem is still people are not looking at things very objectively. They are being subjective "I like this show, so it must be good!" is not objective in the least.

I was referring to how people are calling me an elitist.

In any case, the main problem at hand is still modern anime fans refusal to actually learn about the medium and it's history. Their abhorrent hatred to anything that's older than 5 years ago is apparent. They jump on fad anime's so quickly even though any veteran anime viewer would be able to weed out the merits of a show at a single glance. They are swelling cheap horrible shows with ratings and money, ensuring more crap gets made in lieu of quality titles.

Newer fans must either be educated, or re-educated somehow. They just are not appreciating anime for being art anymore, and devalue the medium whenever they can.

Or there's the other strategy. Let anime fade away into obscurity for a little while, letting the idiots move on, and then reclaim it once they're done mishandling it's carcass.

I never understand how there can be so much hate for gainaxfags on /a/, when anybody who's seen Otaku no Video would realize that gainax is a fucking bro-tier studio.
Then I realize it's because they haven't seen Otaku no Video, and I weep for the youth of today.

Can't hate what you don't watch. You can only hate the people who like it, which a lot of people on /a/ do.

Reminds me of yesterday when somebody started a shitstorm because he said "all anime over 10 years old is obscure unless it had a big influence on its fans" and then proceeded to say that Giant Robo wasn't influential because he had never heard of it - he also admitted he had only been watching anime for four years.

Otaku no Video came out nearly 20 years ago, and I really wouldn't consider the Gainax then to be the same as Gainax now. Not that I have a problem with either... I'm just saying it's a consideration to make.

well hopefully there are enough who would rather actually experience the art form instead of acquiring knowledge of it through pop-culture osmosis to keep the true love of the genre alive.

I'm good on that era stuff especially (as it was the era I was buying VHS tapes out of the trunk of a car at the asian supermarket)

what else do you like? I was just watching Urusei Yatsura (beautiful dreamer) earlier, also rock my patlabor, tenshi, and Venus Wars cred all day long

No, you don't get it. Moe has nothing to do with quality. It has completely to do with tastes.
    >In any case, the main problem at hand is still modern anime fans refusal to actually learn about the medium and it's history.
They aren't as bad as the nostlagiafags who go around distorting history.

HAHAHA OH WOW. The "hate" against old anime isn't anywhere near as prominent as the nostlagiafgas who hate on the current.

It's true, a lot can change in 20 years, but even so, many of the original founders still had involvement with recent projects like TTGL and Rebuild, and I'm sure much of the newer talent at Gainax was drawn to them because of the influence early Gainax works had on them - 10 years from now, Mitsu will be the new Karekano (i.e. forgotten but good), TTGL will be the new Eva, PSG will be the new FLCL, and whatever Gainax is working on at the time will be polarizing

You are ignoring the fact that 85% of old vs new arguments are started by nostalgiafags. A few examples of some blatant ignorance on the other side doesn't change this.

Plenty of people are knowledgable enough about older anime and plenty of nosltaigafags are newfags themselves.

    >Yes, I got that. Thank you. But the problem is still people are not looking at things very objectively. They are being subjective "I like this show, so it must be good!" is not objective in the least.

The word 'moe' is a colloquialism; everyone has their own definition. There is no global ethos, and no single person has a monopoly on what it means; its definition is entirely subjective. (My god do I sound like a broken record).

Even if 'moe' were in the dictionary, it would be right next to 'beauty' -- based entirely on tastes and preferences. I can sort of relate to what you're saying about people who analyze less than you, and then try to put themselves on the same pedestal. However, at the end of the day, no one has a monopoly on objectivity. You need to get over it.

Also, I realize you were talking about anime, and not just moe, however I believe I covered that already.

My god do I sound like a broken record.

    >Even if 'moe' were in the dictionary, it would be right next to 'beauty'

It'd be next to love rather than beauty. Beauty is a trait. Moe is an emotion. "Moe traits" are just traits people find moe.
