Eva is ridiculously more popular in Japan and remains so to this day - Gundam is a huge franchise, too, but it's very, very disjointed - the people who grew up watching Mobile Suit Gundam are in their thirties and forties now, most of them haven't followed anime past their teenage years and know shit-all about, say, SEED, or even Unicorn. Eva is fucking everywhere in Japan even now - and what's weirder still, it was everywhere in Japan when I went in 2005.

It's anime that even people who weren't anime fans watched, and as confused as they must have been, it stuck in the Japanese consciousness - probably because its themes resonate so strongly with Japanese society in general. There's a reason that words like "post-Evangelion" get tossed around as jokes on OreImo - it's considered a real division in the way anime behave, far more so in Japan than here, where most people just remember it as one of the first shows they watched and laugh at the irrelevant religious imagery.

Gundam is pretty much king in Japan. I hear they're even building a real one.
