It really isn't true. What does it even mean? It's a very vague statement. There may have been less anime but anime wasn't as big and communication (ie internet) wasn't as complex. There's no actual evidence fans are "anticipating" or "digesting" shows any less than they used to and that's just nostalgiafaggotry whether it comes from an idiot from /a/ or a significant director.

    No you are retarded.

Nanoha isn't as significant here as it is in Japan, and it's not as big as Bebop, FLCL, and Evangelion are which aren't just popular but were instrumental in establishing the Western (American) anime fandom of the 00s. Not to mention the fact that Eva is still going. It's not a valid comparision.

Internet has existed for quite a long time (and "back in the day" is very vague) but even before that communication between fans happened in fanzines and clubs and similar.

Anime fan culture didn't come from the internet but has existed since the 70s

To be fair, you can say that about any media form and it would be true. I don't think that's specific to anime. Not everything made is going to be or is intended to be a timeless classic for the ages.

lol And what was Cowboy Bebop's impact? It is the definition of being "just big". Its significance on anime isn't about its content as much as it is being an introduction into anime for many people. You can even extend this to Eva and FLCL as well. Eva's true significance was its commercial impact and sparking an increase in TV anime.

I'm not sure how this is even relevant since there's nothing about sales in the OP but the next best selling anime of all time is the original Gundam but more importantly

Accurate statistics on sales are not really available. Oricon for example has increased the number places to collect their data from recently which favors shows made in the past years

Television anime in the past weren't even done with video sales in mind. Touch was more popular than almost anything from this decade but you wouldn't know it by looking at a sales chart

I cut it off at 20 which is where we found Nadia. Note that even if sold 30k+ copies per volume it's more notable for being a television program aired during prime that was so popular it got a forced extension with extra episodes while still airing. Modern shows typically air in the middle of the night and are made with DVD/BD market in mind because no one actually watches them.

If you're going to pretend that there's something wrong with the industry because bishoujo anime is popular now, then you're going to have to extend said "problem" to the two and a half decades of anime.

I disagree. I think overall, anime has become a much more diverse and artistic medium in the past 10 years. In the past 10 years there have been so many different experiments done to further animation in Japan. Has it been successful? To various degrees, yes. But really, if anything is indicative of where anime has headed the past decade, it's worth as an industry is, and that has only been more this decade than in any other.
