Too creepy if he has it made.

Instead he is gifted the robot as a beta tester which he is reluctant to do. The robot starts off looking like a terminator, but later as its upgraded it is made a 'she' and it learns and starts acting human, and it freaks him out when eventually after watching and learning from him it starts acting like the girl whom he loved and lost. Of course you can interpret that as he is just seeing what he wants, the machine wants to better accommodate him so it learns to act like the girl he loved to make him feel better or the spirit of the dead is possessing the machine.

And that question is never answered, even at the very end.

A robot should look like a robot.

A robot that looks too much like a person will eventually do something that doesn't look quite right, and will trigger your brain to say "HOLY FUCK GET AWAY THIS THING IS DEAD YOU BETTER GO BEFORE THE THING THAT KILLED IT KILLS YOU TOO" and it's fucking horrifying when that happens, it's like a massive panic attack. That's what the "uncanny valley" is, something that looks alive most of the time looks dead occasionally and you FLIP THE FUCK OUT

A robot should look like this:

one cortical column of a mouse (or rat?) brain. a brain has hundredthousands of those. and they needed a supercomputer for it.

but they simulate the entire thing down to the individual molecules involved in signaling, so maybe some abstraction is possible there, but we don't know that. we don't know what is required to convert [huuuuge supercomputer we have yet to build] into [strong AI].

There certainly is no "instant AI, just add water" recipie. Even if we have the hardware and some software that _might_ work it would still take decades to train this artificial entity because not a single structure would be pre-configured, unlike human brains which come already pre-structured thx to complex genetic code.

How would even be possible to transfer your consciousness? I can understand "copying your mind", but the consciousness, feels so much different and out of league.

I can't even describe it but i guess you get the idea, something like teleporting your not better defined "consciousness" into another body else and start "seeing with it's eyes"

If someone made an exact copy of you, and you were looking it face to face it would be very easy to understand, for everyone else it might be you, but from your point of view it's definitely someone else. You are you, and that thing is not you. Would you feel it when he got punched in the face? Of course not. Then again you probably understand it already and just wanted to throw words like soul around even if they're irrelevant to the subject, because you're an edgy atheist like that.

correct. your awareness would exist in two copies and each of them would fell they are "you" and the other one is the "copy". The point is you don't lose anything if you make a copy of yourself. So what would you prefer? Just die and it's lights out or one of you dies and the younger copy carries on with all your memories, all your experience and being absolutely convinced that it's "you".
Sure, one of you would still be dead, but the dieing one can die in the knowledge that only a tiny fragment of their experience will be truly dead, namely that what they experienced after you have been split into 2 entities. Everything else will be common to the two of you.

Personally i would have no problem dieing if i knew there was another me (assuming the copy is recent) to carry on. Live for the swarm, die for the swarm, so to speak.
Granted, some basic instincts would certainly kick in the last moments telling me to do whatever is likely to kill me. But on a conscious level it seems like a reasonable thing to do.

Here's a fun thought; At the cellular level, nearly every part of your body had already been replaced several times over. And at the molecular level, EVERY MOLECULE of your body did not exist when you were born!

Think of it like a house that got renovated constantly, until there is not a single brick or foundation that was left from the original building. The "you" that was born into this world technically no longer exists, scattered back into the cosmos.

So what's the big deal about being the "real" you again?

the point i'm making is that the me right now exists as one whole being. copying memories and mannerisms to another body would produce a copy of me, but it would not transfer me as whole into that body. Thus immortality is unachievable through copying and so far the only solution seems to be a brain transfer.

The Japanese scientific community needs to get off their high horse, in trying to create a completely life-like version of a human being.

Scientists clearly have got the outside look of a human more than perfect, I mean look at that thing, it's so vivid. I propose they now work more on motion, muscles, reflexes, motor skills and the basics of human comprehension and thought.

We don't need a bitchy, moody and bossy AI woman. Give me the basics. Loyalty, understanding, submission, cuteness and flirt, anything besides that its just an upgrade I can purchase later on.

so, it's ok for you if every single atom in your body gets replaced, because that already happens.

but it's not ok if there are two conscious instances of "you" at any given time.

the solution is quite simple: use a destructive copying process.

the original will only be a slush of protein once it's finished and you won't feel any different.

To follow up the house analogy... it's like deconstructing the old house, measuring every single stone and its place and building a new one 10m down the street with new construction materials.

your philosophical problem is solved by killing "you" while keeping "you" alive :)

Personally i would use a non-destructive copy process. It's always nice to have backups, even if they're a bit out of sync. better than nothing you know. and they'll agree after all, because their thought process will be the same.

    >Feasible immortality?

Perhaps. You could always use nano machines or something similar to keep your DNA the same. You'll be practically immortal. Not really indestructible though. That's where Power Armor comes in though, and a little bit of genetic engineering.

My point is that by your own logic, you yourself are already dead a lone time ago, you are just a copy with the old one's memories.

Anyway, I found the website where the OP droid was described. The company that funded it? Bloody SANRIO GROUP.

Again, you've still just created another copy. The only difference here is that you've destroyed the original.

There's a reason why they don't just rebuild historical buildings, and instead pay people to move the whole building, also paying people to restore the building. It may not matter to you, if you die, and your copy lives on as you, but I certainly care. It may act, think, move, etc. exactly like you do, but it's still just a copy.

All of your cells in your body don't suddenly get replaced while you're growing. It's a gradual change. Your brain cells don't change. You're born with a certain amount, and that's it.

considering the level of technology required to build strong AI and pack them into the compact shape of a humanoid android, although that's not really necessary... wireless body and waifu CPU in the cellar. Anyway, i'm digressing. The point is that with that technology we could either reproduce with artificial wombs, just build cyborgs or just die out and the machines would carry on.

in the process of deconstructing a house, you kill it.

to extend that to a person, while my copy survives, my immediate consciousness is extinguished. I die.

And I got no problem with redundant copies as long as they are there to keep me living longer, not to replace me.

So I just want to retain my own consciousness as long as possible. Is that too much to ask?

2.) The transfer of human "consciousness" between entities.

And then government decides to intervene and passes a law saying sex must be had at least once a year in order to procreate.
They'll incentivate this by ordering all manner of flirting games to be banned and making rape legal, as well as illegalizing women resisting rape. After all "We cannot allow petty morals to get in the way of the survival of the human race."
Or they'll just ban robo-waifus, and then you either bought one and keep her inside at all times where she is forever sad due to being unable to go out on dates with you, or you have a ton of money to have the officials ignore you.

An Actroid is currently expected to be sold for $20,000 USD. Though it might change if the Dollar falls in value too much compared to the Yen.
That's Affordable. Sriously, if you have a moderate income and don't have a family to feed, you could get one.

They aren't full artificial humans, and they are not meant to be. It's like those robot secretaries in GitS SAC; only smart enough to make coffee and do data input, but gets knocked out by circular logic. So the cost would be controlled.

firstly, your brain cells may not get replaced, but the molecules they're composed of get fully replaced over time.

What difference does it make if i replace all your atoms at once vs. replacing them gradually over time? The whole proces is done while you're unCONSCIOUS anyway. You, personally will not notice the difference. you will not experience death. You'll just wake up in a new body with some new parts.

Do the atoms that you're made of make you "you"?

What is your consciousness but the state of self-awareness that emerges from fusing your experience of your environment with your experience of the past? It's something that comes into existence everytime you wake up. It ceases to be everytime you sleep. And its loss is not death.

You're mixing up concepts here. You should clarify what your concern with being copied really is, loss of conciousness certainly can't be the issue.
