Japan has by-and-large gotten over the whole nuking thing. PR spin has
managed to contain and reject the whole episode as "It can't be helped."
They blame all of WWII on militants within the government, using it as a
scapegoat so they aren't at fault for anything, and they can say "WAR
IS BAD, MHMM" 2. Partially as a result of the PR campaign after
WWII of "WAR IS BAD" and the pitiful JSDF funding and training, being a
professional soldier is seen as an occupation on par with being a
cashier at a fast food restaurant, even by the soldiers themselves.
There's no sense of honor and pride for military service. 3. The
US military still has a signifigant presence in many parts of GLORIOUS
NIPPON, notably Kadena AFB on Okinawa. Outside of the immediate locale
of these bases, soldier = lower rank foreigner; immediatley making them a
violent, drug-abusing thug. 4. Everything the average Japanese
person knows about Americans they learned from Hollywood and other pop
culture influences; perpetuating the violent, drug-abusing thug image. 5. Tourists are usually terrible examples of human beings. 6. Japan hates foreign things, which represent change, which Japan hates even more.
