If you want an anime that short and sweet which reflects on human nature try Kino’s Journey

If you desire a really depressing melancholy anime go with Casshern Sins or Kaiba.

Going back to angel's egg for a minute, some of the music sounds really similar to the Lavender Town theme from pokemon. Anybody know off the top of their head if it's the same guy?

I'll second this because Birdy is painfully overlooked. What could have been a silly genre series or dumb ecchi comedy turned out to be one of the best shows of the decade.

Kazuki Akane's other works like Escaflowne the movie and Noein are also worth watching.

I must confess, I didn't really 'get' Angel's Egg. I can tell it's a really well-made movie and all, but I always find it hard to evaluate "deep" or "artistic" movies like this. It does have some great art design and atmospheric moments though.
