this is the case, and it ultimately gets presented as a positive thing,
then Anno is fucking up the meaning of the original series. Rei was
presented as being all nurturing, all loving, like a mother. Asuka was
fiery and hostile. In EoE Anno was using Asuka and Shinji's relationship
to represent the Hedgehog's Dilemma; Rei was linked to the
Instrumentality Project, which was the end of all pain and the ultimate
solution to the Hedgehog's Dilemma, ending both the pain of interacting
with others and the loneliness of isolation. Shinji ultimately realised
that living is worthwhile, because despite all the pain it brought him,
he also came to feel a love for his friends that was worth protecting. Living is struggle, and much of life is pain. That's why the first person he sees back in reality is Asuka. If
Anno is depicting Shinji restarting the world and going for Rei as a
positive thing, it means that he's saying, "lolno, it's okay to stay in
your tiny antisocial world where nothing will hurt you". This sequel
theory might make sense with the original message if the last two
installments reveal the first two to be an elaborate troll, with Shinji
retreating into Rei-fantasy as yet another attempt to escape reality
which will ultimately be brought crashing down. I like this theory,
because it makes the Rebuilds an Evangelion-style response to today's
anime and to the people who have clung to Evangelion for decades
(guilty...) in the same way that the original trolled mecha otaku. The
first two Rebuild installments built up a perfect 'fantasy' version of
Eva. "What if he could save the girl and be all GAR-like!" Building up
an appealing fantasy for viewers before tearing it down is just the same
as what original Eva did. Making the 'fantasy' this time around a
checklist of the desires of a lot of 'fans' would be very cold, very
meta, and very Anno. He'll do it if he hasn't sold out. |
