Having huge sums of wealth and being able to open a theme park isn't what makes Gainax rich. It's the fact that they have a few shows that will ALWAYS be selling merch, dvds, new formats for its shows, and remakes. They never truly have to worry about going out of business unlike studios that don't have such moneymakers, such as JC Staff. Not enough to buy skyscrapers or giant office complexes, but no anime studio will ever be that rich.

I don't get the hype at all, it doesn't look that interesting. Gimmicky animation and not that captivating premise.

I watch anime because I like that animation style and Japanese themes. Its not that animu is inherently superior to western animation, but the two are distinct. If I wanted to see a generic example of the decline of american cartooning, I'd watch Nickolodeon.

Just as not everything that comes out from the States is something out off WB's stable or Disney.

Shin-chan and this may be the exception, but hopefully it will bring more focus on -animating their shit- to tell stories rather than taking advantage of shitloads of over-explanation from their dialogue/monologues.

It may be pandering to the AS crowd a little bit with the run times of the eps and the content(thankfully not straight up moe or robots this time), but it beats forced melodrama and cute girls doing cute things. If you're not in for some wacky Dead Leaves/Superjail shit, then get off the bus and stop hating before episode one has even dropped the deuce of knowledge on us. If it's not your cup of tea, then move on to shows that are more typical and fit your tastes. Animation is animation. We make some pretty detailed stuff, but our most prominent and similar stuff to this is on TV an in your face every day.

The aesthetic when it comes to anime is that it's supposed to all look like the movies or with Fullmetal Alchemist, Naruto(on a good ep) or GitS as the bar to rate normalcy.

For the most part, that look is all we see, dependent upon the visual source material(manga artist's style or designer's style). But not every show we see will look like that.

Yeah, American animation has looked like this for a bit, with simplified cartoonish designs that are easy to animate. Is it such a big deal that Gainax has decided to lean a little further into the style they used on Dead Leaves and farther from EVA?

Will you hate anime in the future if more artists from that country learn to draw more like this series or like Oda?
