The best cons are the mixed medium ones, like Comicon or Megacon. That way it's big and it's not just anime, so your average age is probably higher. Plus awesome comic and scifi stuff. You ain't gonna see Spaceballs cosplay at an anime convention.

I went to the Japan Expo in Paris in 2006. It was just a giant market with Narutards in cosplay popping here and there.
There was a maid café too. 5€ for a cup of instant noodles, 3€ for a photo of you with a maid

I went to Comicon in Calgary a couple years back, it was actually a lot of fun, and I saw an attractive Yoko cosplayer as well, I was surprised they let her in with the lack of clothing.

A lot of the exclusive stuff that is sold at Comiket at the "industry" booths is pretty cool. You'll have to stand in line for some of the really popular stuff and risk missing out on other things though. If you go with a few people you can split up your lists of stuff you expect to have a hard time getting so you can try to cover more bases in less time.

The vendors there didn't seem to mind selling to people of different nationalities - I saw a lot of foreigners there from all sorts of different places. They even have an information center in one of the halls specifically set up for foreign attendees. In fact one of the guys I know that was there with me got a lot of the smaller doujin artists to draw sketches for him. Some of them didn't put a whole lot effort into the sketches, but you can't expect too much for a freebie. A few though took one of his sketchbooks and held onto it for a few hours, in some cases more than a day and returned it to him with some pretty awesome stuff in it.

A-kon is the largest anime convention in North America and they don't just center around anime and manga. There are also vidya booths and other stuff to get into.

I haven't been to any but I would like to check one out in the future.

I've been to three, twice I stayed all three days which was a fucking terrible idea because the roomates for each turned out to be gross slobs and left their clothing and food out everywhere.

So I just go to take photos and buy shit. Swap panels are a goldmine, I got a copy of Persona for free at one while it was selling for $130.00 in the Dealer's room.

Also plan what you're doing every day. Cons are fucking boring if you don't know what you're doing.

How much are figures discounted at cons? I might go just to buy shit and see concerts from idols since 1-day entree fees are generally less than $20.

Ended up calling this one whore who friendzoned me years ago just so I could feel better because I was talking to a girl.

My only experience with cons is that they make me feel way fucking older than I should. Whenever I go I see jailbait in skimpy outfits only to get sad over that fact that I'm past the age where I could legally hook-up with any of them. Feels bad man.

Other than that, most the cons I've seen are little more than large markets for those who don't plan to get involved in stuff like cosplay and drawing/singing/DDR contests and shit. Occasionally they also play some anime or amvs which is pretty much the only reason worth going I guess, but then again you can just download it. It's not even worth taking pictures because unless you've got a godawesome camera, chances are the ones you download from the con's website are going to be way better than any crap picture you take.

Figurines aren't that bad, they're prices usually match what they're sold for online. So a little overpriced, but you'd probably pay more online with shipping.

Watch out for mech models though. A guy I know bought a limited edition Gundam piece before a con and found it selling there for three times the original price.

I've been going to cons for years and they keep getting worse and worse. I went to a con a couple of months ago and it was filled with kids screaming YOU LOST THE GAME and BUTTSCRATCHER. I had to Google the second one because I had no clue what it was. Anyways, it seems that anime cons are more about video games and online culture than anime these days. I am almost 30 so I was older than the vast majority of people there. It made me feel old.

Went to Desucon because Fukumoto. Also, played mahjong (the feeling when I won my first round ever with just hatsu was quite weird), watched some anime (there wasn't much else to do during night) and idled.

I guess it's kinda pointless to go to a con without any friends and being too introverted to talk to anybody, but it can't be helped..

So I'm at A-kon with my friends when we decide to grab a pizza at the indoor mall. The place is full obviously because of all the Con goers so we sit down at a table with this normal looking guy already sitting there. So we're sitting there waiting for out pizza when he turns around and introduces himself. We're all surprised because nobody outside of here is that nice. He starts talking about Trigun and is all in all a very nice guy. He says he's mad because he had some replica pistols and the mall wouldn't allow him to bring them in. The moral of the story is ignore the fat weeaboos and enjoy yourself. Not everyone is a weeaboo.

I ended up buying shit then heading to the hotel asap to chill with bros.

Been to a swedish con twice, cosplayed both times. Although my cosplays weren't good by any standard and cosplayers with actual costume-making skill probably looked down on me, I feel that I should've been recognizable.

1st con, cosplaying Graham Spector, the wig I ordered was shit so I had to dye my hair blonde. Looked pretty bad. Still, the comment about me being Mario was so fucking out there I didn't know what to say. Recognized once, maybe twice, first one thought I was Spanner from Reborn first (which I admit is a mistake I don't mind, they're not that different) before realizing I was Graham.

2nd con, cosplayed as Punpun. I was basically a bedsheet ghost with a beak and black limbs (because his stickfigure legs would appear black). In hindsight, I should've made it possible for me to take my arms inside and close the holes. Mistaken for Menos Grande several times, first time I raged fairly hard but after that I just took off the head-part, looked down on them mockingly and chuckled, sometimes with a slight pat on the head as if to imply that I pity them for being ignorant. Recognized once like 4 am in the morning, I almost felt like hugging the person but settled with a firm handshake and a sincere "Thank you for not being a she-faggot."

I do a northeastern convention circuit every year, and I have alot of fun with it.

I do Anime boston, connecticon, AAC, and sometimes bakaretsucon. I also went to pax east this year and will continue to do so.

Conventions are fun, you just avoid stupid kids like you would anywhere else. If you have friends go with them. buying stuff if nice, panels are nice. I am an AMV junkie so AMV contests are fun for me as well. its a good time. /a/ should try it. gets you out of the house.
