My dad got me into it. He's been interested in Japanese culture 'n' stuff, and was a very talented artist, so he bought some 'how-to-draw manga' books and passed them on to me, so I got interested, and so on.
On an unrelated note, those books were one of the first things I've fapped to.

I am also born Korean. Korean parents aren't all necessarily self-loving Japan-hating bigots and xenophobes. Often using catch-phrases by Shin-chan even today, but overall disinterested.

Most of the manga and anime I own was bought for me when I was younger.

I stopped my 'hobby' during Grade 12/1st year university. 3 years later, here I am.

My mom walked into my room for the first time with all my figures about, and for some reason she got really excited about them. She picked up Sawako and said "This is so cute!". Then she pointed to my RAH's and said "Look at that one! Wow!" I was happy she wasn't mad about the money I spent. (I don't have a dad so his opinion does not matter)

pic related; the Sawako she picked up.

Parents are fine with me watching anime. My dad likes some animes that have really good animation. He walked into my room when I was watching 5cm and asked if I could put it on the TV so we could watch it. He also bought a GitS box set before I had really gotten into anime (only really watched it on toonami at that time) and we watched that. So my dad doesn't really care. My mom doesn't have an opinion on it at all really. I don't order figurines or posters but if I did I don't really know how they'd feel about that.

When I was younger and saw people watching/talking about anime I always thought it was really cool. I used to go to a card shop for magic the gathering and they always played anime there during tournaments and stuff that always looked really cool.

I told my parents to view amine as serous attempts at story telling.

My analogy to them was, "Imagine an artist not having enough money to show their movie through holly wood, although they don't have the funds necessary to show their visions in the movies, they are however able to show them in animated form", i then proceed to show them cowboy bebop.

For all you white people. Do your parents force you to partake in white people activity (football, baseball, all that shit) when you were young? If so how did you stray away to becoming an otaku of some sort?

Normalfags have an almost instinctual reaction to reject anything they find unusual or different. Since it's not mainstream TV or sports or something they are naturally comfortable with, they subconsciously categorize it as something negative.

My Dad joined me in watching Highschool of the Dead yesterday. My dad's favorite anime is Crest/Banner of the Stars. My mom doesn't really care about anime.

I showed my parents fullmetal alchemist and cowboy bebop, which they enjoyed.

They let me buy things as long as I'm doing well in my classes, and they're glad that this hobby motivated me to start learning a language.

My figures have been deemed "girl dolls", which I'm allowed to have them on the living room mantle if I want, but I keep them in my room anyways.

I got a dakimakura about a month ago and ever since then I've brought it into the living room when everyone's watching TV and so far haven't gotten any comments about it other than "that's weird".

My mom let me quit soccer and swimming on my own free will after forcing me to join it 5 years earlier. I was always shy anyways, so I guess the events just naturally occured after that.

Now look at the cesspool we have going

Here's hoping animu and mangos stay underground outside of Japan

I was forced into some of those kinds of things (probably not as much as some people, though) but I really was never able to enjoy them like other people did. I don't really know why, I've always had specific things I am really able to enjoy and those things have generally not been mainstream interests.

this. I work part time at a hospital and my co-workers, seeing me as a regular young white male, thought i would be absolutely fascinated by sports illustrated. So they just drop off all of those magazines on me. I just smile and try to read it, even though i dont know what the fuck the articles are about. Quite annoying.

This thread made me realize that I've never had any significant relationship with my parents.

They have never said anything about my interest in anything. I don't know how to feel about this....

I made my mom sit and watch summer wars with me.

She cried when it got to the part where the family sentimentality was laid on pretty thick, and later told me of how thankful she is that her sun has good taste in fiction.

I was happy to hear it..but hearing it after watching Summer Wars...

I never did either. I had a pretty fucked up childhood in general, though. My mom was an untreated schizophrenic and my dad was a workaholic who probably never wanted kids in the first place and pretty much ignored me and my sister.

My mom introduced me to anime with Princess Mononoke back when I was like 8.

    Now she criticizes me if I or my brother watch it ;_;
