How do your shifts work, anyways?

I'm considering getting one in wound care later down the line.

I don't actually have a job right now. I just graduated from nursing school and getting a job is actually pretty hard right now. A lot of hospitals in my state either closed down or layed off a lot of nurses so there is a shortage of available jobs. And the ones that are available require nurses who already have experience so I'm shit out of luck with that. I'm looking to work somewhere interesting like psych or surgery, but the available jobs for those positions require previous experience. I've applied to med-surg positions, but I'd rather not do those if I have to since other nurses have warned me about burning out. I'm definitely not going to work in a nursing home, though since I don't want to be responsible for 40 patients at once.

It's not like I haven't had work experience since I spent my last summer working as a nurse extern at a hospital. I spent time in different units like spinal cord injury, medical-surgical, oncology, same-day surgery, MICU, and the ER so I'm familiar with a lot of different topics. I'm no means an expert since I never actual had a real nursing job, but I'm pretty confident that I can answer general medical questions using my nursing knowledge.

Have you or any of your coworkers been exposed to /contracted HIV or a similar disease while dealing with a sick patient?

It depends on how strong your immune system is, generally. Just dry off quickly and take it easy for a while if you want to decrease your chances of getting sick.

    >>39317374
Unlike most people in the medical profession, I'm an objectivist and I feel that patients who pay for treatment are valued customers and should get their money's worth for the services that I provide. That means I will be an advocate for my patients and will give them the best care that I can give.

    >>39317421
I haven't seen anything really fucked up in terms of something life-threatening, but I have seen things that irked me. It took this neurologist three hours to prescribe the omeprazole that was supposed to be given before this patient could start his prednisone drip. The neurologist had to personally apologize to the guy and I went with him to file a complain with the patient care advocate. Also, the butt doctors take forever to do their colonoscopies and endoscopies so patients get pretty pissed off when they've been starving and shitting for the past day or so and they have to wait even longer to get the thing over with.

aunt and uncle (both my mom's siblings), died of cancer. Not because it was incurable, but because their insurance wouldn't cover them sufficiently. Even as my uncle was obviously and painfully dying, the doctors refused to treat him or even check him in to the hospital solely because his insurance was bad.

It looks to me that those who survive cancer are not the ones of great willpower or spirit, but the ones who have the best insurance and the most cash. It's like that one episode of South Park where the cure for AIDS was money.

Good luck, future colleagues. I haven't actually held a real nursing job yet so I'm not going to bullshit you about it being hard, yet rewarding since I don't know if that's true. I do have to say that I have enjoyed my nursing profession so far since I love helping my patients and hope that I still have this attitude when I become a crotchety, old nurse.

People who have watched Angel Beats know that Yui suffered from a spinal cord injury before she died and went to high school. From what we've seen during her flashback, we can speculate that she is a quadriplegic, but can still carry out respiration without the aid of a ventilator. The spinal cord injury patient can face many life-threatening complications such as pressure ulcers, infections, and aspiration because of their limited mobility. However, one of the most serious is autonomic dysreflexia.

In a nutshell, autonomic dysreflexia is a hypertensive crisis that develops because of a stimulus that occurs below the level of injury. If there is an irritation below the level of injury like a full bladder or impacted stool or sexual intercourse, the patient's blood pressure increases and in response the body sends signals for the blood vessels to relax. However, these signals don't go to the level below the level of injury so that blood pressure will keep on rising. If the stimulant is not removed and/or anti-hypertensive meds are not given, the patient can die.

In previous episodes of Angel Beats, we can see that Yui is obsessed with pee. She makes excuses about going to the bathroom during the episode where they bullied Kanade and when they went back to Guild she bragged that she would hold in her pee. I believe that these statements are related to Yui's death. Like I mentioned previously, one cause of autonomic dysreflexia is a full bladder. Yui could have had a full bladder, but didn't realize it on account of the fact that she has a SCI. While her mom appears to take good care of her as evidenced by her lack of pressure ulcers, she is only one woman and can't be there all the time. Since she couldn't catheterize her in time, Yui's autonomic dysreflexia remained untreated and she eventually died of her hypertensive crisis. That is why she is obsessed with pee.

In Narcissu Side 2nd, the story talked about Helpers, who were volunteers that worked in the hospice section of the hospital where the story took place.

Are there volunteer options like that available? I'm interested in volunteering at a hospital when I'm not in classes.

Lots of hospitals have volunteer programs.

Contact them and ask, could be anything from putting on entertainment for kids to just talking with people.

I don't know if you'd want to volunteer for hospice. There's a pretty high burnout rate for nurses since they have to deal with their patients dying all the time. As a volunteer you'd probably get close to these people and then have them die on you a week later or the next day.
