who have watched Angel Beats know that Yui suffered from a spinal cord
injury before she died and went to high school. From what we've seen
during her flashback, we can speculate that she is a quadriplegic, but
can still carry out respiration without the aid of a ventilator. The
spinal cord injury patient can face many life-threatening complications
such as pressure ulcers, infections, and aspiration because of their
limited mobility. However, one of the most serious is autonomic
dysreflexia.
In a nutshell, autonomic dysreflexia is a
hypertensive crisis that develops because of a stimulus that occurs
below the level of injury. If there is an irritation below the level of
injury like a full bladder or impacted stool or sexual intercourse, the
patient's blood pressure increases and in response the body sends
signals for the blood vessels to relax. However, these signals don't go
to the level below the level of injury so that blood pressure will keep
on rising. If the stimulant is not removed and/or anti-hypertensive meds
are not given, the patient can die.
In previous episodes of
Angel Beats, we can see that Yui is obsessed with pee. She makes excuses
about going to the bathroom during the episode where they bullied
Kanade and when they went back to Guild she bragged that she would hold
in her pee. I believe that these statements are related to Yui's death.
Like I mentioned previously, one cause of autonomic dysreflexia is a
full bladder. Yui could have had a full bladder, but didn't realize it
on account of the fact that she has a SCI. While her mom appears to take
good care of her as evidenced by her lack of pressure ulcers, she is
only one woman and can't be there all the time. Since she couldn't
catheterize her in time, Yui's autonomic dysreflexia remained untreated
and she eventually died of her hypertensive crisis. That is why she is
obsessed with pee. |
