I got the "Low Quality" version from Mochi, poor animation might have been on my end. And I don't mind a nice little schoolgirl story (I'm a complete sucker for them), but the trailer promised badass, and the OVA didn't deliver.

Also the music felt really bland and generic and I feel like that kinda kept me from enjoying some of the fight scenes as much as I could have. For some reason it also bothered me that they never spoke, it was just lacking in substance....

Until only a month and a half ago, BRS only occasinally popped up. But yeah, during the month and a half, there were those BRS dumps, and we did talk about wanting/cant wait to see it. From what I've ascertained:

Black Rock Shooter is some sort of entity that tries and rescue girls who have fallen (Black Gold Saw) etc. She failed to save BGS (and got those scars from that stabbing). The whole Otherworld scenes throughout the rest of the show is what actually happens after Mato finds Yomi's star in the grass and meets BRS. Yomi, who in despair after being left out by the friends, is absorbed into the Otherworld and coerced by Dead Master into merging with her, thus disappearing from the real world. When Mato meets BRS and merges with her, they try and rescue Yomi from Dead Master (and succeed, that's why Dead Master's shadow is 'pushed' away from Yomi at the end).

The whole timeline is mixed.

Black Rock Shooter is Mato's other self in a parallel world, and exists at the same time Mato does. The beginning scene where BRS is fighting Black Gold Saw insinuates that BRS is trying to save BGS (presumably the other self of another girl), but fails and loses her katana + gains scars). The whole Otherworld scenes throughout the rest of the show is what actually happens after Mato finds Yomi's star in the grass and meets BRS. Yomi, who in despair after being left out by the friends, becomes closer to her 'other self' (Dead Master) as a result, eventually disappearing from the real world when she finally merges. As a result of her sadness and grief, her form as Dead Master is 'evil'. Mato, upon finding Yomi's charm and meeting her own other self 'BRS', resolves to rescue Yomi (which is interplayed throughout the show as the fight scenes).

tl:dr Mato meets her other self through her resolve to rescue Yomi, and merges with BRS. Yomi meets her other self through her despair, and merges with Dead Master.

The only reason there's so much So in this is because Ordett is trying way tii hard to appeal to a large fanbase. Namely, the moe-SoL ones, and the action loving shounen reading fans. Anyone looking for a deep story has obviously hit the wrong anime OVA.

I don't think it's effective to use the fantasy little girl combat as a vehicle for psychologically saving IRL little girls. It's like using the Saving Private Ryan beach opening scene as a psychological combat for Jack Nicholson's descent into insanity in The Shining. Thematically it doesn't mix and both parts cheapen the other.
