And with that, online manga viewing as we know it has been shut down.

Almost every single site has been hit, and the ones that haven't been hit are behind in updates by a few weeks to a few months. I honestly don't know what to do. I hope #lurk starts updating faster.

Not just the Big Three, but most manga are at least a few months, some even years behind.

I don't really think I'll maintain interest in the series I'm currently reading if I have to wait for certain ones to catch up. Some of the ones I read aren't even licensed.

That is odd though isn't it. Lots of products are sold at vastly different prices to different markets all the time. And with this product you even have built in protection in the form of a language barrier. Japs cannot into bsns.
    >> Anonymous 07/22/10(Thu)04:04 No.38197768
This is a good thing, really.

I mean, I spend too much time reading manga as it is. It's there on a website, and if I'm bored I can just stay up all night going through an entire series I haven't read yet.

The convenience turns against us all. My only regret is that I didn't bother saving some of my favorite series which won't likely come over, like Mx0 or Zettai Karen Children.

    Simple.
    Sales are decreasing, correct?

As a publisher, you have to look for ways to correct this. There are TWO ways to deal with decreasing sales.

    A.Remove Factors that Decrease Sales.
    B.Create Factors that Increase Sales.

B is largely on the hands of the actual production company- and somewhat of the advertising department.

A, means studying what causes loss of sales.
    Some of these are supposedly:
    1.The Weakening Economy.
    2.Changes in Trends.
    3.Piracy.

Well, Publishers cant do anything about 1, and 2 is again largely an image problem that needs to be dealt with by the advertising department, so to feel useful, they'll crack down on 3.

    Why?
Because in the end- they break it down as "Piracy affects potential sales." that simple.
    >> Anonymous 07/22/10(Thu)04:05 No.38197817

Wild scenario here, they shut down scanlator sites? What's that going to do, convince me to buy manga? Never bought manga before, and the disappearance of piracy (lol) will not change my stance.

And pretty soon you won't even be able to buy anything outside of big three and Negima, since manga companies are having so many problems.
Speaking of, you know what pisses me off? Yen Press changes the covers of their light novels they license to appeal to a wider audience, and then have Borders and B&N shelve them in Manga rather than one of the places the wider audience will actually look for them.

And this is why intellectual property, in both concept and execution, is idiotic. Instead of focusing resources on better content, better distribution, etcetera, IP holders waste resources on "piracy", which will never create more than single-digit percentage points in losses, is usually undertaken by people who "pirate" far more than they could possibly buy, and is mostly an excuse for the IP holder's own organizational shortcomings.

All the while creating ill will among the fanbase, making them MORE committed to not buying licensed products, and ultimately, "piracy" is impossible to stop unless you shut down the Internet.

    Onemanga sucked anyway.

they had a stupid ass policy regarding manga that was too violent or too sexy, even before the threat of advertisers pulling shit.

Also, if manga publishers were smart, they'd get in touch with the current trends to offer online subscriptions, and hire up some of these scanlators (some, not all) to translate various series to english, or hire translators period.

fuck dealing with North American publishers, who often censor out shit. They could start their own shit, and accept money from audiences around the world.

They'd make bank easily. Especially from countries where the currency holds higher value.

But then again, we're talking about japan here, they cant make business decisions on their own merits, they have to copy someone else.

They should embrace the internet if sales are failing. I mean, come the fuck on, look at all the people reading the shit online. Hint hint, that's where your audience is, idiots.

I used to download my manga when I began reading, from IRC
People started hosting DDLs so I started using those
Online readers came along, I didn't use them, used my DDLs and IRC
Online readers went down, I will carry on using my DDLs and IRC.

Nothing of value was lost. Anyone else never bothered with on-line readers?

Shit sucks, I honestly can't even begin to count how many different series I got into because of Onemanga. Sure it has shit resolution and costs them profits, but it's just got such a huge backlog of obscure unlicensed shit that's hard to find elsewhere, and I still buy physical copies of about the same number series as I did before Onemanga was around.

It's true that some other more resilient sites will probably spring up in the coming weeks, but I doubt anything will get back up to the level that Onemanga was at in terms of # of series and a centralized location for checking for updates.

My one last hope is that someone makes a current siterip and puts it out in torrent form so that I can at least finish off all the series I had in my backlog later.

I don't care much about manga anyways, there were very few things that either didn't have anime or went on longer than their anime that I even bothered to read.

I won't grieve for the loss of the OM simply because it brought too much exposure to what always was and should have remained a grey operation.

It's quite likely that scanlations will all but die until this whole thing blows over (6 months to a year if I have had to guess) assuming the scanlators don't close up shop entirely.

What I'm far more interested in is which will happen first, the resurrection of scanlation or the financial panic with companies realizing they fucked up spectacularly.

I'm not so much annoying that they're closing down sites left, right and centre but rather they're doing this without giving most of us any real options.

If I could read high quality manga that's released on time and is up to date, I'd pay a small fee or subscription. Lucky for me I'm not a broke ass 12 year old. Money isn't a problem for me and plenty others.

As it is now my only 2 options is either to go off looking for different sources which considering publishers are on the attack right now which would probably put more pressure on good scanlators over time.
Not to mention most non mainstream manga I read is only because I read a chapter or two on sites like OM while looking around.
Or I drive for 5 hours to the nearest store that sells manga which he gets at random times and then drive home for 5 hours. Fuck that.

We're in a digital age now, time for publishers to realise that.

Anyone who says that this isn't a big deal or that this is a good thing is a shill for Western publishers like Yen press and Viz. These crooks overcharge for their (mostly crappy) localizations that are printed on crap paper. English releases in the U.S. will run you anywhere between $10-$20 per volume and they attempt to validate these prices by claiming that they are selling an imported good. In Japan most readers have the more casual access to the phone book sized jump volumes which have consistent releases and can buy the volumes later on(for prices ranging from $3.50-$8.00) if they really enjoyed the story. We don't have that luxury and are now forced to choose between paying exorbitant prices for manga or not buying at all. I choose not to buy until the pricing improves.

Once again, Japan fails at digital distribution models.

People will not buy a product they've never previewed. It boggles me that they would go through the trouble of taking down a site that offers lower-resolution, non-tankoubon quality translated in ANOTHER LANGUAGE. It does not infringe upon Japanese sales like fansubs potentially do. These things are the primary way by which most people are exposed to new manga. We don't have the luxury of stuff like Weekly Shounen Jump, Monthly Gangan, and Dengeki Jishou coming out regularly with 4684 in them and for ~$4 a volume. I can sorta understand if they were planning to run a Crunchyroll-style site for manga, but in its absence, this is just fucking stupid.
