ITT: stupid people involved in anime

    Hideaki Anno related:

    >Anno pauses for a moment, and gives a dark-browed stare out the window. "I don't see any adults here in Japan", he says, with a shrug. "The fact that you see salarymen reading manga and pornography on the trains and being unafraid, unashamed or anything, is something you wouldn't have seen 30 years ago, with people who grew up under a different system of government. They would have been far too embarrassed to open a book of cartoons or dirty pictures on a train. But that's what we have now in Japan. We are a country of children."

    >Anno understands the Japanese national attraction to characters like Rei as the product of a stunted imaginative landscape born of Japan's defeat in the Second World War. "Japan lost the war to the Americans," he explains, seeming interested in his own words for the first time during our interview. "Since that time, the education we received is not one that creates adults. Even for us, people in their 40s, and for the generation older than me, in their 50s and 60s, there's no reasonable model of what an adult should be like." The theory that Japan's defeat stripped the country of its independence and led to the creation of a nation of permanent children, weaklings forced to live under the protection of the American Big Daddy, is widely shared by artists and intellectuals in Japan.

"The quotation usually attributed to Churchill is, "If you're not Liberal when you're 25, you have no heart. If you're not Conservative when you're 35, you have no brain." However, the attribution is false. There is no record of Churchill ever speaking these words, and it is highly unlikely that he would have because Churchill himself did precisely the opposite. He entered politics as a Conservative and was a Conservative at age 25. He switched to the Liberal Party at age 29 and was a Liberal at age 35. (He returned to the Conservatives at age 49.) Also, his beloved wife, Clementine, was a life-long Liberal, and Churchill would hardly have delivered such an indirect insult to her. "

"It should also be remembered that "Liberal" and "Conservative" are the proper names of British political parties and do not translate precisely to theleft and right wings of the American political spectrum. That is too long a subject for this space, but it can fairly be said that Churchill's political viewpoint and guiding principles did not change radically, despite his twice switching his allegiance. In Churchill's own view, changes in the party, not in himself, compelled his party switches. "

    > Critics who treat adult as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adult themselves. To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence. And in childhood and adolescence they are, in moderation, healthy symptoms. Young things ought to want to grow. But to carry on into middle life or even into early manhood this concern about being adult is a mark of really arrested development. When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.

Anime and all its related sub-cultures is Japan's greatest and most important export. Destroying it would remove from Japan a unique, needed culture. it would be a true tragedy.

I don't see how. Rei is passive. While I've grown greatly attached to her character like all of Eva's cast, I always find it hard to understand why anyone would want that much of a passive companion. What's the point of a human interaction if it's going to be mostly one sided?

What annoys me is that out of the thousands of anime made over the years, no one gives a ghost of a shit of a rat's ass about the opinions of any of the creators unless they made something that happened to be a smash-hit.

What's unfortunate is that smash hits tend to be unpredictable, and so random-ass nobodies suddenly get elevated to revered cultural icons. Even Gundam was a totally out-of-the-blue hit; its original airing failed so badly they pulled it 7 episodes before it was supposed to end (hence Tomino had to scribble in a new ending + this also explains why the logistics/realism of the One Year War suddenly no longer adds up towards the end, with GMs hitting production, the Feds kicking Zeon off of the entire fucking Earth AND following them up to space and beating them.. all happening in like a month and a half's time). Also Tomino is pretty stupid too.

Japanese are very much unable to blame themselves for their problems; then again their entire populace has had a screw loose in its head regarding foreigners .. one that has been loose for many centuries.

I don't see this as attacking the americans so much as resentment towards their influence.

As in, he sees Japan as a nation of basement dwellers who still haven't moved out of their parents' house. The child is contemptible, but the parents really should have booted them out and forced them to man the fuck up a long time ago.

Not saying I agree with the viewpoint, I just see where they're coming from.

At this point, I'm not sure if it's really The United States of America as a country, so much as it's the idea of "The Americans."

It's not limited to Japan, either. Most countries that aren't the US tend to resent the idea of "The Americans" mucking everything up. But actual, on the ground Americans are in the exact same situation.

It's just a catch all for "outside forces beyond our control," at this point.

If you want to bring back the concept of shame, then make people PAY for their mistakes. That means no social security, no publicly funded abortions, no other forms of entitlement.

I guarantee you people would start to get their shit together if individual responsibility became a reality, as it is, responsibility is collectivized.
