    A pleasant day to everyone.

After chatting with an anon yesterday, I think I can somehow surmise the ending of the Tatami Galaxy. Aren't all of us talking about him grabbing the opportunity in front of him?

At first I was thinking just linearly - if he got the Mochiguman and gave it to Akashi, it would probably lead to something good between them. But seeing the novel art one more time as well as the statements of Watashi lead me to believe that it's going to be the moths that will actually lead to his escape.

Moths are attracted to light, right? If Watashi turned the light off, which is connected to grabbing the Mochiguman that's in front of him, it will also force the moths to move somewhere else, and one of these places will be his way out.

Watashi already noted that the moths were free to saunter about the parallel universes. I think that was foreshadowing the final episode.

At first I was pretty unsure about the pertinence of the moths, but then I realized, especially in the first episodes that they've always been attracted to Akashi. This has been most prominent during the first and second episodes.

In addition to that, the novel art superimposes the blueprint of a door (with the connotation of escape) with the moths and Ozu. That's what actually got me really thinking.
    >> Anonymous 07/01/10(Thu)05:44 No.37079650
That's a pretty creative prediction OP. I still think he's just going to give it to her. Then again that is a little boring...

The opening denoted by the color black is superimposed with the moths and Ozu. I think there's a very good chance that it's going to happen in the next episode, although I'm not sure what's happened in the novel.

Before he can get out, though, he must escape the tatami galaxy. I think the fortune teller was pertaining to the literal and figurative meaning of grabbing the opportunity in front of him. She meant for Watashi to grab the Mochiguman literally on his way to Akashi.

    >as the statements of Watashi
Oh god there's someone named Watashi?

Are you sure you're not mistaken?

Watashi literally means "I" or "myself"

For a character to be named Watashi, I imagine that's meant to imply the viewer be put in their position. Someone they're supposed to empathize with, or something.

If it's the main character, they might just use that rather than give him an actual name.

It's kind of funny to see someone call a character "Watashi" though. It's like of like saying you are the main character.

I know that. I personally think it's easier just to call him Watashi than 'I.' It obviates confusion. It's been established ever since the second episode that his perceptions of the world has been skewed all this time, and corroborated with our glimpse of the real Ozu in the ending minutes of episode seven. I think I've established (through my previous statements) Watashi as just a simpler, less complicated denotation of the titular character to use. I know that's not his real name.

These other groups are still reliant on Funimation's subs, however, and all that Funi's really added to the anime series is the subs. Production and everything else was based in Japan.

By the way, Funimation has only licensed to stream the series. It may never get released as DVDs in America.

Why do you think that this latest version of the main character is the most important one? In earlier episodes about half of the time there wasn't any indication that he was trapped in his own room in the end.
    >> Anonymous 07/01/10(Thu)06:25 No.37080613
OP, I love you for being intelligent.

Anyhow, that's quite a speculation. I actually think it's really good. The Mochiguman is indeed connected to light, which is connected to moths, which is connected to Akashi.

Anyhow, episode 10 finally showed us why this show is called "Tatami Galaxy". My original speculations revolved around the series title, but now it's already been explained.

    >>37080513
He wasn't trapped in his own room during those previous episodes. It is only in this universe that Watashi is trapped, but it is also only in this universe that he recognizes what reality is and also recognizes that he is primary at fault for all his failures in life. He wasn't trapped in his room with his previous incarnations. He was just living his life. The moths can just cross the parallel worlds but it doesn't mean that the other Watashis are trapped in the tatami galaxy.

I'm not clairvoyant, so I didn't know it was foreshadowing at the time. I did pick up on the reasoning behind the title in roughly the same time, but I didn't know the series of movies were going to be the condensations of the plot. Neither did most people, really. I only got it by the eighth episode, so there were at least six episodes as room for speculation and there's still even one more film that's not been expressed. It's Watashi's incomplete film that he promised to show Akashi, and it's about a love that endured time and space.

I can only speculate what will happen the next episode. And it's part of what makes the show fun for me. You may say it doesn't have that much meaning, but that's your opinion. Allow us to have ours.

The show is actually cautionary as regards infinite possibilities. No matter how many choices one is given, as long as one's character is rotten or even non-existent, it really wouldn't change much. This was what Higuchi pointed out to Watashi during the ninth episode: existence is not all about potentiality, but entelechy. It's not about the infinity of possibilities (and even then, he says, those are limited), it's about how one goes about life to make those possibilities real. Better an imperfect reality than an unrealized possibility. It's actually more about seizing the day than the thought of infinite possibilities.

You can't figure out what will be in the next episode?
Next episode is the final episode so there's 3 choices.
-Happy End: Most likely given the tone of the series and how the story has progressed. (Watashi has self realization that life is what he makes it and stops creating alternate realities and starts living his one life. As a result Watashi and Akashi finally reach each other...fate love eternal happiness derp.)
-Bitter End: This one doesn't seem probable but i'm sure it could be done.
-Gainax End: Inconclusive ending. Probable in this kind of story setting. Could be combined with good end and bitter end for ALL ENDS EVER end.

I'm not even speculating. This is how stories are.....you 14 year olds speculating about this shit just haven't seen/read enough.

He's not making an alternate reality. The alternate reality is already there, only that it's a what-if tackled in the next episode. This is in-tune with the many-worlds interpretation of the series, alluded to even by Watashi himself with his mention of Schrodinger. The rewind may be to a different place and time.

The idea of fate is also heavily alluded to in this series, with the connections between Watashi and Akashi no matter what the clubs Watashi choose. The red-string of fate and the black-string of fate is dealt with in equal amounts, and while fate has something to do with life, fate alone cannot damn one in life, because there's a human factor involved.

Anyway, your statement is also speculation, if you didn't note it yet.

As far as I can tell, the frustrating possibility of the Mochiguman, the light switch and moths that seems most plausible is probably as far from what's going to happen as possible.

    If not, I will rage.

    >>37081940
Yeah, I think that's made obvious in episode ten. The previous episodes were build up for episode ten, where Watashi eschews all forms of choice and escapes into himself, which is the final and ultimate act of cowardice he could enact. Watashi realizes that it's not with the choices or with escaping to the realm of imagination that's the problem - it's with himself and primarily himself. Even in those previous failures it was still better than his not making a choice at all in the tenth episode.

At least, that's how I interpret the rewinds. Having a singular timeline I believe is actually more simpler than Watashi conjuring alternate realities.
    >> Anonymous 07/01/10(Thu)07:18 No.37082083
    >>37082023
Continuing that, I have actually addressed the probable existences of four different timelines in tune with the four different chapters of the book, but currently the series is more apt when one perceives of the occurrences as a singular timeline in the different alternate realities of Watashi. It's just his actions and his roles change with every rendition of a different choice.

Okay, honestly, it was hilarious when I thought you were trolling. But it seems you're seroius. You're going really off the target here. I don't think the authors and artists in charge of this series put so much thought into it. They probably just come up with chapter after chapter randomly.

You're wrong. Masaaki Yuasa based this work off Tomihiko Morimi's novel, but it ended with only four chapters. Yuasa made this series into his baby, as he does with his other series, although he doesn't have to be as involved with the storytelling. If you were expecting a copy of the novel with Masaaki Yuasa, I would say you are very wrong, maybe even ignorant.

I'm not trolling, I'm serious. I made a lot of long serious speculations in this thread and others.

But put yourself in an author's shoes: How much thought would you put into the theory that's behind a story you are writing?

They are actually counting the number of Galaxies and believing that the author has some knowledge of Schrodinger's universal theories.

OP's speculation is great, because it is based on symbols. But these speculations are in my opinion absurd because it would be uncommon for an author of light novels to go that far in their writing.

Most authors I know write off the top of their heads and tie it all up afterwards. That's why I say these details are "probably just random."

Simply because there's no "nice" way.

In the novel Watashi smokes (you can him smoking on the cover art). They removed that completely from the anime.

I think 3 moved me the most. Mostly because I went off on a tangent, reminiscing.

    >>37098417
Yeah, that's just like me. I loved three so much, because his effort and diligence were peerless. It was just misguided, however.

The misguided thing is one of many things in that episode that moved me. This is highly subjective, but there's also how Watashi tries to replace his physical inability by technology. I'm sure I've done this exact same thing with books: I tried to hide my inability by buying lots of books and reading ferociously. More often that not, I'd say "this book is no good, I need to find another". But it was good.

I dunno, that thought is just depressing to me.

I don't think it'd matter even if everyone looked like giant eyed moe blobs - the dialog and storytelling would turn the people off who would have dropped it because of the style.

Alternatively, I do remember that when using Adblock a while ago in Firefox, the list of objects would give the URL to the flash object. You can perhaps just download that.

Or if you don't have that, in Firefox you could select around the flash player object and click 'view selection source'. It's after the JS has finished running, so it should have the object url in a tag or something.
