Ok, so mostly my anime/mango journey was a lonely and independant one. I kind of randomly went through a whole bunch and just found some I like every now and then, while dismissing most as shit.

Having trouble finding anything worth reading/watching, I finally decided to go and try one of /a/'s reccomendations. Most of you have probably seen that big pic with a whole lot of 'good' animes.
Anyway, I just went for 5cm per second, seeing as I enjoy good romance.

And I have to say, it was complete and utter shit. I was hoping that something spoken of highly here would be fairly good, but this anime was a complete dissapointment. The only good thing about it was how it looked. Thats it. The story is dry and uninteresting. Nothing happens. Ever. The creators just seemed like they where trying to appear artistic and smart, but they only succeeded in being dull and drawn out.

Seriously, what the fuck ? I mean, I knew that not everything /a/ masturbates over is any good (lol, K-ON), but still. I would rather watch 500 episodes of filler from Naruto or something. At least something is happening there.

Pic related - its the piece of shit I was suckered into watching.

Pretty typical /a/non. Can't spot thematic depth unless you get hit over the head with it like in Eva or LOGH.

instead of creating a thread bitching about stuff you don't like, why not make on about stuff you actually enjoy?

I'm afraid I don't really like what most of /a/ likes. I can't relate 90 percent of the time. Makes me wonder why im even here, but meh.

it's about the two of them growing apart, and him not being able to let go of his feelings for her.

    it's nothing grandoise

Movie was all about the theme of separation, how literal and figurative distance sets people apart, etc. The NASA rocket in the 2nd episode, for example, represents the main character, who becomes more bright and attractive to others the more distant he becomes, but is unreachable. Which is why you see the girl in the 2nd arc give up on him, or his girlfriend in the 3rd arc constantly texting him to no avail. His childhood friend is the same way - because she's so distant, she burns ever brighter, and he constantly yearns for her but will never reach her and his own star dims.

    >The story is dry and uninteresting. Nothing happens. Ever.

OP, there is no primary storyline. The entire film is essentially three short stories about love and distance.

They could have condensed the stupid thing into a 5-minutes short film. The relationship between the guy and the girl is very clear, its just that, as i said, nothing happens. Guy meets girl, they like each other, cant be together cuz of circumstances, he still thinks about her after a long time. Whoop-dee-fucking-do.

The movie had more to say than that. also 5 minutes wouldn't properly convey the atmosphere of loneliness and longing that is so prevalent, especially in the 2nd episode with the open fields.
    >> Anonymous 06/29/10(Tue)19:03 No.37003891

    ...

You can basically describe any story like that if you really tried. Just because the plot was simple doesn't mean it didn't have depth (inb4 DEEP)
    >> Anonymous 06/29/10(Tue)19:06 No.37004000
    >>37003929

yeah, a part of which I explained which you dismissed with "deep". It's okay if you don't like the movie, we don't all have the same tastes.

There's more to "having a heart" than getting emotional over pointless bullshit. Human emotions are remarkably simple to manipulate - it's much harder to stimulate the mind than the tear ducts.
    >> Anonymous 06/29/10(Tue)19:08 No.37004087
    >>37003944

Yeah. The whole thing was just them being lonely.

    >>37003951

Maybe not. It is just unnecessarily long. It may have had depth, but you really could have conveyed the whole idea in like 10 minutes. It wasn't that big.
    >> Anonymous 06/29/10(Tue)19:10 No.37004155
    >>37003951
Except when you describe this one like that, you aren't leaving out in details.

    >>37004087

    >but you really could have conveyed the whole idea in like 10 minutes.

You could convey all the ideas of Ghost In the Shell in a 10 minute speech.

It's part of weaving the themes into the narrative dude. You felt it was too drawn out, most people ITT didn't and thought the atmosphere was essential to this movie. Enough said.

Other types of narration =/= shit. Sometimes a director has to show nothing to convey something. If you find this ridiculous then you probably shoundn't watch these kind of films.

How would you convey the feeling of a growing distance? Make the character make a statement?

Depth this depth that. If I as an author would like you to feel impatient I would have put you through a 25 minutes of nothing rather than simply tell you how should you feel. Am I getting to you?
    >> Anonymous 06/29/10(Tue)19:20 No.37004533

If you ever feel up to it you should try watching it again, keeping the theme of distance in mind. Scenes that held no meaning before might strike a chord with you the second time around.

Or just watch something else instead.
    >> Anonymous 06/29/10(Tue)19:27 No.37004808
It all depends on the mindset in which all of us approach this movie. It is clearly not made for people like you, OP.
If you expect a usual Love Story with a lot of bad drama you will be dissapointed.
But if you approach it with a mature mindset (and you were separated from your lover in the past for a long time) you will understand this movie and it will touch you deeply.
The Term "Nothing happens" is also your interpretation of the scenes you were watching and not the movie's fault.

Yep, realistic relationships with other humanoids isnt really something I cant relate to, so I have to give you that one.
