The ending was an accurate portrayal of real life. The nice guy gets friend zoned by a girl because she has already fallen for another girl who was an asshole to her.

It's funny because this anime was terrible except the last episode and even then it was barely above average.

Also I think you're being really biased OP... perhaps you've never been past the friend-zone?

Does it matter? If Otonashi was in FFTactics, he'd be the guy that fought for what he believed was right.

He died nameless, while some attentionwhore turned into a king and got recorded as a national hero for manipulating people, If you ask me, If i was to walk in Otonashi's path, I will never look back.

    >> TRDR! > DRRR! !yUinyanZc. 06/29/10(Tue)12:59 No.36989581
Nope, Kanade would have been cruel to acknowledge those particular feelings before leaving. Yuzuru was clearly not thinking properly when he said, "Let's stay here forever," as it is completely antithetical to the stated theme of the show and that which he tries to convince (and succeeds) the rest of the cast into believing: life is a precious thing that should be embraced. Staying there is tantamount to not living. In his mindset, he could have easily decided to take over the position as the Programmer and wait forever for Kanade, as the last Programmer did, if he had sufficient motivation -- i.e. Kanade's indication that he should wait there again for her indefinitely rather than moving on.

Sorry that it's a little too DEEP for you to understand, though, /a/non.

    Knights in shining armor.

Nobody wants the job, but somebody's got to do it.
You know what you get for being a hero? you get shot at. hurt. a pat on the back, an atta-boy.
You spend long hours out of your way to help others, you end up lonely. sometimes it doesn't seem like the effort is worth anything at all.
The girls don't speak to you, your friends take you for granted.
so then why do you do it?
Because there's no one else to do it. If it wasn't for you, there wouldn't be a knight in shining armor.
    So buck the fuck up.
you may not get your princess, But you still saved the mother fucking day.

In the end, what Otonashi did was pretty much unnecessary. Even if disappearing is a good thing, everyone will eventually disappear. They have plenty of time so why hurry? They have things in the afterlife that they used to not have, so why not let them savor that feeling?

That's called "human nature" -- people are fallible, may change opinions based upon events that occur and can lose sight of the bigger picture. You can try to convince yourself that he was a jerk all along, that everything he did was but a facade used to manipulate himself into a world that he and Kanade could be alone in, but I don't think that's the intent his character's portrayal is supposed to have.

Which is what cause disappearance. Obviously, not everyone had them in afterlife, or they'd disappear unconsciously. To have "mass disappearance events" some crazy thing is needed.

    >>36989920
There are a million times as many people in "real life" than in the afterlife they were in. Kanade's montage also shows the loneliness that occurs when you befriend people and they invariably pass on, but you cannot/choose not to. There was no indication they could travel away from the school grounds, either, so it would be like choosing to live in your parent's basement your entire life and never travel.

When the shadow finally gets her, she makes a speech about how she could start over if she wanted to, but chooses to remain herself and fight for the SSS.

Granted, she eventually finishes fighting, but the whole speech was to point out the reason to continue "living" in that world.

Really, there is no difference in existence. You exist or you don't. Alive or dead don't really matter. Most major religions in fact, tell you that the afterlife is much better.

Really? What's the big difference between the afterlife and real life? In the afterlife, the only thing that's really missing are just disease and all that other jazz. Even if reality is worth living in, the afterlife is still pretty good. You have friends, you have those who trust you, and you can do things that you've never done before. If that isn't heaven, then what is? Why choose to go back to suffering?
