    GOOD ANIMATION THREAD

Japan has some of the best and most original animators working in hand drawn animation anywhere right now. Let's celebrate them and recommend series with good animation.

    pic motherfucking related, Shinya Ohira

Who else found Birdy's animation wierd? It was fantastic for the most part, but in season 2, shit became QUALITY during some of the faster scenes. The details were completely gone, leaving a blob of colors. The style changed to Kemonozume for a few seconds at a time, and then right back to normal.

Shinya Ohira is pretty good. He has an interesting style, but depending on the context of his animation, it usually looks TOO distorted.

Much better is Tetsuya Nishio or my personal favourite, Hideki Himasu. I don't think anyone can capture natural movement of people and animals as well as Hideki Himasu can. And his scene from Ghost in the Shell, where Motoko tries to rip open the tank hatch, is amazing!

if it's so good why are Oshii and even Ghibli so down on the supply of good animators left?

go read the interview between oshii and the guy who did Ponyo; youll see how bad a shape the hand drawn animation market really is.

Birdy season 2 featured some really great animators and had some superb scenes of animation. On the other hand, there were a couple of episodes where they screwed up big time. I don't know the story behind it, but it was a scheduling problem - they literally ran out of time to finish the episodes properly. There was one scene in particular where the animation/art was worse than storyboard level! These issues were largely fixed for DVD, I believe. Still, Birdy was very ambitious in a lot of ways, and often it produced some great stuff.

The problem is that there are perhaps too many animators who care only about cool looking flashy shit and not enough that care about creating good overall works.

I think Oshii and Miyazaki hit the balance well. Ponyo was stunning, what he got from his animators. And all he really told them was 'we're going to use more drawings. Other than that just have fun and animate!'

Hosoda's another director who has good animators under his belt. But seeing how animation is a job that requires you to move around a lot anyway, you see names popping up all over the place.

Can I just take this opportunity to point out that faggots who spurt out that mantra 'Western animation has better framerate' are fucking stupid. If you compare the average, mediocre anime series, then yes, it's probably true (and that's where the art/detail vs motion comes in), but there are anime out there with animation that shits all over basically Western animation. If anyoen thinks for one moment that Japan doesn't have god-tier animators then you're totally wrong.
