In major cities maps have Romanji on them so you can match Kanji/Hiragana to stops.

They also have an ingenious system where you just buy the cheapest ticket possible and then top it up at whatever station you get off. Best way to ensure you never accidentally pay too much.

It was ridiculously easy to get around. Any of the more complicated trains such as Shinkansen had English speakers at the counters so no worries.

Everyone should go as many places as they can. Japan has Comiket, Akihabara, Shibuya, obviously. But also some amazing hiking, cool beaches, awesome museums and religious places.

Go to Japan, take a train or two around, and bike from one major city to another. Best trip of your life.

JAL is restructuring, they're still around. ANA is another good one. Otherwise some domestic companies like United and Continental have Japan flights as well.

If you stay at the youth hostels or inns that are a bit off the train station path, you can get pretty decent hotel deals of like $30-60/night as well. And food isn't that expensive if you eat at local restaurants or get conbini meals.

Thing to keep in mind is there is the JR West and JR East rail passes that don't overlap. The general All-Japan rail pass is even more expensive.

And yes, unless you plan to use the Shinkansen at least once, the rail passes are a hard sell. I've also heard they have less night trains these days, but I haven't gotten my itinerary finished yet, so I dunno.
