parents' fault they all got in trouble to begin with. She
was right about not eating the food of the spirits, and I think Miyazaki
was trying to say something about following your instincts with that.
That scene is actually another example of Miyazaki's symbolism. Her
father and mother gorge themselves, and Chihiro begs them not to, but
her father says 'no need to worry, I've got cash and credit cards'. In
other words, we have money, so we can consume until we are pigs. Which,
again, plays into Miyazaki's criticism of consumer culture. But,
about Chihiro's behavior - there are plenty instances of her being
spoiled. In the beginning she snottily sticks her tongue out at the new
town, pisses and moans about her flowers not being good enough, clings
constantly to her mother. And later, her lack of manners are illustrated
when she doesn't even bother to say thanks to Kaji for helping her, for
which Rin calls her a dope. Even Yubaba refuses to put her to work
initially, because she says that anyone can see that she's spoiled and
useless. Of course, throughout the film she proves otherwise. And
eventually Rin apologizes to her for calling her a dope.
