Entertaining film, but not one of Miyazaki's best. Not because of any real lack in quality (such as Howl's Moving Castle), but more of a lack of marked genius.

That's fine though, I really enjoy it and not every movie has to be Porco Rosso or Mononoke.

Kiki was kind of a self-centered little brat. Definitely loli material, but unpleasant otherwise.

Spirited Away is so popular because its incredibly imaginative fantastical elements capture a lot of people's attentions and also because it's a very solid story about pre-adolescent coming of age.

I'm sure there are people who don't find either quite as appealing as the majority, it's just a matter of taste.

how? I can't see how it's a better "coming of age story" than pretty much every other fantasy story about a prepubescent child going on an adventure in some fantasy land

I really expected the writing and story to impress me the same way Princess Mononoke did, but, unless I missed some really important stuff, it just didn't seem all that interesting. and the "HAKU IS A RIVER" bit where both of them started crying made absolutely no sense. is there a culture barrier or something? why was that treated like some amazing revelation and by far the most emotional scene in the movie?

What sets it apart (and I'm not going to say it's better than EVERY other coming of age story, but it's better than most) is that Chihiro is a very realistically written character who has a good amount of depth. One of the reasons Miyazaki succeeds so well with films like Totoro or Spirited Away is he has an excellent knack for depicting children.

the finale felt extremely anti-climactic too. chances are that was part of Miyazaki's intention, but once again I can't figure out why the same way I couldn't figure out the whole "river" thing.

I think it's kind of overrated too, but in this case I think it's just that the movie didn't resonate with you. It's like trying to explain to someone why you think a Van Gogh is gorgeous when they simply don't see the aesthetic appeal.

I think Spirited Away's popularity isn't really the result of anything avant-garde or 'deep' about it. It just manages to be highly appealing to a lot of people.

I posted this the other day and no one really payed attention to it. Who knows, you might find it worth reading:

Miyazaki's symbolism is very simple, but very effective. Two of the primary symbols (out of many) in the movie are gold and food, which simply represent money and consumption. You'll notice that Chihiro's parents turn into fat pigs while inhaling mountains of food, and the same thing happens to No-Face.

Another example is when Haku accuses Yubaba of not realizing when she has lost something precious. The first thing Yubaba looks at is her gold - not her baby, which is what is really missing; and really precious.

Another of the primary symbols are names, which represent identity. Loss of or confusion of identity is one of the primary themes. You see this with most of the characters; There are quite a few examples of people mixing up their identities, confusing each other, and seeming to have double or split personas.
Chihiro almost forgets her real name and becomes Sen. Haku can't remember his name and Chihiro initially thinks there might be two Hakus. Zeniba and Yubaba are confused for one another by Big Baby and Chihiro because they look identical. Yubaba mistakes her own Big Baby when he is a mouse. The river spirit is mistaken for a stink spirit, and so on.

So, if you put these two observations together, a lot of people interpret the movie as a criticism of modern consumer culture. Money and consumption are prioritized and favored over cultural identity and the sense of self and family takes a back seat to material possessions.

This is a good essay that goes more into it:

    >OH BOY THAT TOTALLY DOESN'T LOOK LIKE A MONET PAINTING AT ALL

Just because an artist has a recognizable style doesn't make him unoriginal. Miyazaki is supremely imaginative, and his films are FULL of originality.
    >> Anonymous 06/20/10(Sun)17:27 No.36559973
    >>36559937

Also, while I'm at it, another symbol worth mentioning is Yubaba's baby. Miyazaki uses some brilliant structural symbolism with Big Baby. If you look closely at his room, you'll see that the entire room - floors and walls - is padded with pillowing. And Big Baby lies around in huge piles of pillows. Also, all of the walls in the room above the padding are painted with fairy tale type scenery.

Most interpret this as Miyazaki's commentary on how parents spoil and coddle their kids these days. They are overprotected and over-safe. And hence, (again, simple symbolism) they become 'Big Babies'.

This is reflected also in Chihiro's behavior at the beginning of the film. She's clearly very spoiled, and mannerless. The last scene before Chihiro leaves the bath house when Yubaba insists on giving her one last 'test', everyone boos at Yubaba and tells her to just let Chihiro go. They are trying to protect her. But, Chihiro steps forward and says 'a deals a deal - I'll take your test'. Which just shows how much she's grown when you compare it to her behavior at the beginning.

There's a lot more to it than that as well. When I first saw it, I agreed with most people about it just being a simple fairy tale. But it really isn't. There's a reason why this is widely regarded (at least in the West, I don't know about Japan) as Miyazaki's masterpiece.

    >considering she was right all along and it's her parents' fault they all got in trouble to begin with.

She was right about not eating the food of the spirits, and I think Miyazaki was trying to say something about following your instincts with that. That scene is actually another example of Miyazaki's symbolism. Her father and mother gorge themselves, and Chihiro begs them not to, but her father says 'no need to worry, I've got cash and credit cards'. In other words, we have money, so we can consume until we are pigs. Which, again, plays into Miyazaki's criticism of consumer culture.

But, about Chihiro's behavior - there are plenty instances of her being spoiled. In the beginning she snottily sticks her tongue out at the new town, pisses and moans about her flowers not being good enough, clings constantly to her mother. And later, her lack of manners are illustrated when she doesn't even bother to say thanks to Kaji for helping her, for which Rin calls her a dope. Even Yubaba refuses to put her to work initially, because she says that anyone can see that she's spoiled and useless.

Of course, throughout the film she proves otherwise. And eventually Rin apologizes to her for calling her a dope.

i enjoyed all the Ghibli movies, but they often feel rushed or incomplete at the end.

Now that i think about it, alot of animes are like that.

Don't worry - all that stuff I wrote, I didn't pick up on any of that, not even at all, the first (hell the second and third) time I watched it.

It's funny because, like I said, his symbolism is so, so simple and obvious once you put it together. But he's just really subtle about it. It doesn't surprise me at all that most people think of it as just a simple kids movie. I did myself at first.

/a/ is this really what you have become? Is it really time for me to move on and forget about you?

I hope so; that would be a good reason to finally leave this shithole
