Whoever is the NERV mole would have been able to give her what she needs. Mari is an agent, but she doesn't work alone.

Tokyo-3 has very strict access rules, that's why Mari has to enter via airdrop. There is no secretive way to reach the Geofront by land. Whoever got her out of the school is her contact in NERV.

If UN knows ahead of time that they needed an EVA pilot to infiltrate Tokyo-3, it is very easy to splice espionage training in between Mari's pilot training as soon as she was selected. Shinji is an exception in being an untrained kid being dumped in an EVA at short notice.

The reason Shinji goes crazy to save Rei is because of the way he lost Asuka earlier and not wanting to lose anyone else he cares about. It's not like he suddenly and arbitrarily decides to go for Rei because he loves her and her alone.

I just realised something!
As a known Eva pilot, technically there would have been no way for Mari to leave her post and "vanish", in order for her to sneak into Japan. Her location would normally have to have been constantly monitored. Eva pilots are expensive assets.

But since she self-destructed her Eva, suddenly she is immediately put on the reserves. There was nothing left for her to pilot at the moment, and as such it would be acceptable for her to be "on leave" and vanish for a few months.

So maybe the Eva self-destruct at the start of 2.22 was a way for Mari to enter Japan? Maybe that's why she told the Eva it did a good job. She sacrificed it and she felt bad. (There was no way the self-destruct was otherwise necessary, as the Angel was already dead.)

If she wants to fake her death then blowing up the Eva would be a bit of a waste. And anyway her escape pod was clearly visible, you can't hide that.

It was bugging me for a while that I didn't know why the Provisional Eva blew up. Evas are pretty sturdy things, a dying Angel's explosion alone would not be enough reason to eject. Hence, Mari needed her Eva to be taken out of commission so she would be free to role-play Metal Gear Solid.

Well, upon reflection, you may be somewhat correct, as Kaji mentioned that the proper parts for 05 hadn't yet arrived by the time of the Third Angel's escape from captivity. Still, the four legs may have just been temporary parts, and yet the design of the base denies that, because there's no way a bipedal Eva would have been able to move swiftly in those cramped tunnels.
