They're going after at least 30 scanlation sites. This will obviously include Onemanga, but what will happen if Baka-Updates Manga or #lurk goes down?
    >> Anonymous 06/08/10(Tue)14:48 No.36001074
    IMPORTANT NOTICE:

THEY'RE GOING FOR SITES MAKING A PROFIT ON THEIR SCANLATIONS, NOT YOUR AVERAGE-JOE NON-PROFIT SCANLATOR.

I remember trying to read scanlations back around 1999. Everything was hosted on tiny sites on Geocities (this will obviously change to small blogs) with instructions to get files from IRC. If all the download aggregation and link aggregation sites were to vanish, we'd have a return to that, and to scanlations additionally hosted on /a/ and on series-specific forums.

Would it suck? Yes. Did we deal with it before? Yes. On top of that, scanlations now are SUCH higher quality than what we used to put up with. Hands up anybody who used to read shitty scans with over-compressed jpgs translated from Chinese or French editions typeset in Times New Roman or Comic Sans! Bonus points for Great Teacher Onidzuka!!

They've bowed to every demand, except speed next day scantilations and quick digital distributions. Think for a minute, a bunch of 20 year olds with pirated photoshop, self-taught image manipulating skills and amateur Japanese translators are able to clean and translate a manga in one day after the manga raw is out and distribute it on public file hosts. The manga industry can't do that. The manga industry with schooled professionals, better resources in every possible way CAN'T DO THAT. It's freaking MADDENING to wait for something you can have on the spot just because of bureaucracy and hidden interests. Why should I wait till August for biomega 3 to come to the states when you can easily have it out by next month, why should I wait till august for Evangelion high school apocalypse when you could plunk that on have it ready for purchase next fucking week? Provide good services I provide money.

any not for profit scanlator still takes away business from a legit japanese publisher by scanning, translating and distributing the works for free.

if you think they are going to stop at the scanlation sites and not go after scanlators, you are mistaken. This is not 30 years ago when japan didn;t give a fuck about fan scanlations.

The only things I'm buying right now are Yotsuba& Lucky Star and the Haruhi novels. I'm not much interested in manga, neither is a lot of people, in the west anime is more popular than manga, because pic related.

Funny they always blame piracy despite comics and manga WORLDWIDE declining, people are getting bored of the same shit over and over, and rather than change your buisiness model to compete with piracy you'd much rather piss the pirates off so they won't buy shit from you.

People buy Crunchyroll subscriptions; people will buy online manga subscriptions. Maybe not /a/nons, but plenty of people will.

I believe in the principle of at least making things equal between Japan and elsewhere. How much does an issue of a manga magazine cost? How much does an issue of WSJ cost? It's probably cheap enough to offer entire magazine subscriptions. I shouldn't expect tankoubon quality, but the translation should be quality, and it should be able to stand on its own and entice me to buy the tankoubon when it comes out over here.

    >not paid in royalties
Actually, that's how they get paid. Tankoubon, anime, and merchandise sales will rake in the big bucks. Your salary from [manga magazine] is simply a means to that end.

Buying online magazine subscriptions would probably put little money back in the artists' pockets. As for buying tankoubon and such, I dunno, is the manga licensing model as ass-retarded as the anime licensing model (i.e. non-Japanese sales don't go back to the original publisher and artist)?

I download mango and full albums not to archive as though I'd bought it legitimately, but to check them out as though I were flipping through it in a bookstore or listening to a demo CD at a (good) record shop.
If I don't like it, I delete and don't download any more of it.
An iTunes-esque economic model where publishers license, translate, market, and contract scanlator groups to edit & typeset everything could work. But it'll never happen because the publishers are retarded.

I'm a buyfag for stuff I actually like (bibliophile lol; I enjoy printed books, and prefer having something I can hold in my hand to a scan on a screen), but there is a significant percentage of things that I want to buy that just aren't available in English. If those things I wanted were available in English I'd snap them up like a little kid with a birthday cake, but since they aren't, I'm reading the scans.

Vertical, Viz Signature, and Dark Horse are getting my money lately because they're publishing stuff I actually want to buy.

I usually end up buying something I read on the internet and love. I know I've read a quote from Tokyopop saying that scanlations are good for them because they can see what's popular, and what they should pick up - because people will buy the official volumes to support the artist.

But I usually only buy the Japanese version because I don't want money to go to the faggots at Tokyopop / whatever shit company does translations. Half the time they suck ass (in translation or editing). The other half of the time, they're too expensive. The Japanese volume is cheaper, directly supports the Japanese side of things (bookstore/artist/manga publisher) and is a metaphorical spit in the face to the American publishing companies.

As for translation, even if they hunt down every site on the internet, sue them, and get them shut down, you can't remove the scanlations from the internet. They'll get around. Someone's got them downloaded and will reupload them. It's the curse of the internet, once it's there it's never gone.

And as for me, I'm going to take advantage of that curse and keep posting, even if it means death.

tl;dr fuck that shit, they can't stop us
