I say Mononoke isn't that main stream, and it sorta of a niche anime title. The sames goes with Dennou Coil, Mushishi.... Along with almost half the shows on that list.

Really, man? I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one here who thinks that's just nostalgia-goggles at work. Storyline is incohesive as fuck, 2/3rds of the episodes don't move the plot at all, and the last 5 or so episodes is when things actually move forward, but ends abruptly.

If anything, the anime does well at characterization through weird events, but the real meat of the anime is sparse and mainly only at the very end.

Some episodes just have no reason for being there, like fridge monster episode.

I've seen Dragon Ball Z (when I was a kid), Inuyasha, and I've read Bleach (but stopped after SS). I've taken a look at One Piece before and it also follows the same trends as all other shounen (it just hides it well). Since I'm not interested in watching more of the same show repeated with different characters and backgrounds I decided against watching it.

Instead I'm working on Turn A Gundam, an anime that I would recommend to anyone whose fond of Mecha.

It really doesn't cover enough of the several genres of anime. Slice and Life and Sports are rather unrepresented in the chart. Heck even some fanservice anime could be on the list.

For instance one that definently should be there imo is Hajime no Ippo which would go under sports.

To us shounen = young males because that's the literal translation. To the Japanese shounen = a genre because that's how they categorize their manga in the stores. It's like Otaku, Otaku = your house when translated. Eventually though, the word become recognized to staying within your house and dedicating your life to a hobby. In other words, just because a Japanese word means something in English doesn't mean that that is what it means to the Japanese.

Right next to that section is the sports section. And then there's a Mystery section... and on and on. Granted most of the stuff in the Shounen section come from Shounen Jump and other related publishers.

I also think what is happening here is that people are looking at sites like Mangafox or Mangaupdates and are seeing what is listed as shounen. Almost all of that "categorization" is being done by the staff at said sites. Simply put, none of this is categorized like that over here in Japan.

Science-fiction is not meant to be realistic, but it is a genre driven by concepts. Good science-fiction is well conceptualized with either imagination or ideas of sociological merit. Fantastic Children is a fucking mess of hackneyed sci-fi concepts which don't even mesh together and are put into a godawful story with terrible pacing (5 episodes of flashbacks in the middle of the show? That's good pacing?) and a laughable intent to shock you with its ridiculously plot twists (probably the most egregious example of this is how the main character is revealed to be a Greecian near the end of the show, with no explanation given as to how he conveniently managed to find Helga at the beginning of the story, nor why there was any reason for him to be a Greecian to begin with. Not to mention the show drops characters and plot lines and amateurishly Remember the detective? Remember how he ended up playing no role in the story whatsoever?

I think you're confusing popularisation with actual definition. If you were to walk into a bookstore, the 少年 category would have a lot more than you action/adventure manga. The same as the 少女 section would have more than cheesy romance and mahou shoujo. The popular opinion may be that shounen = Dragonball and One Piece and that Shoujo = Sailor Moon and Utena, but that's a very narrow minded way of thinking about it. And it's ultimately inaccurate.
