Rumor has it that the director and designer for K-ON had to fight a lot of internal arguments in their attempt to minimize the amount of fanservice in the show. Then it turned into a smash hit beyond all expectations. And Ghibli stuff is orders of magnitude more successful than things aimed at otaku.

I'd expect KyoAni to try to turn themselves into the seinen version of Ghibli in the future.

that's the main thing. it's not like there's a lack of funding anymore or no technical ability available to them, but there's no 'visionary' around that would allow for an actualized original production. so everything looks like kind of a cynical play at the lowest common denominator, which, while fun to watch and easy to market, isn't going to be great.

it would be the case of bringing just a few of the right people on board, but that's wishful thinking probably

Thanks for expanding that out. I agree.

I do think they're moving towards something though. They're developing some interesting things with the crew they've got. Indeed, what they do need is that one person to pull it all together for an original project. I've seen no evidence they have this at all.

For a first project, its not like you can just find someone and have them direct. That'd just end up like it is now - them acting as a production crew for someone else's ideas.

I also think they still have issues with going from TV to the big screen, though Disappearance was a step forward. Directing for movies is not like directing for TV.

KyoAni have the talent alright, its just bringing about the right concept. KyoAni as a company has been around for almost 20 years. Many of the animation directors and general directors are bigshots that have worked in the industry for almost 20-30 years now.

They are probably just not sure what to do with the runaway success they have all of a sudden had.

Gainax for example, after Evangelion, Gainax stopped making anime for about 4-5 years because they just made too much money and didn't know what to do with it. It got so bad that they got charged with Tax Fraud and the CEO went to prison. It wasn't until about 2001 that they slowly came back and started making anime again.

KyoAni probably won't face the same fate, but big successes can do crazy things to a company, sometimes they become too lax.

Perhaps the fanbase just adapted to it or evolved along with their media.

If you remember what used to fill this niche back in the 90's then you know what I mean, how it has all changed.
For the better, for the worse. I don't know. Its just big tits vs tiny hands, a matter of taste.

Richest is probably Toei or Sunrise. Selling DVDs doesn't really bring alot of money to a company, its all the surrounding merchandise that does. That said K-On does have a fair amount of merchandise, but you just can't beat the mega merchanise from all those kids shows made by Toei. That includes Dragonball and One Piece.

Toei animation is just a small branch of the larger group.

They're not exactly known for being well funded.

Toei is one of the oldest and largest studios in the industry.

Pretty Cure alone is a larger franchise than all the anime this season combined.
