imo the first two angel beats were far superior in any of the rest, they seemed to have promised much more depth to the future of the series (Yuri's past and fighting against a heartless God). However now it really just seems even more like Haruhi V2

    Angel Beats is weird

I enjoy it, yes, but I can't tell if I think it's exactly good or not. One thing that particularly bothers me about it is how when people are getting hurt/killed it's either comical or SUPER SERIOUS, and it rarely works as comedy and never works as serious (because there's no sense of urgency).

I couldn't take Yuri crawling in seriously, nor the whole last part of episode 6, because I knew they'd be totally OK in a matter of hours, and they WERE.

    Weird.

After finishing episode 7, I've concluded that I share no desire to see this show through to the end.

    Why?

This show is catered to 15 year olds : The premise is abysmal. The core cast is as flat and formulaic. The show's pacing screams "throw as much AWESOME into each episode as possible, show no moment of remorse for the touching story about her siblings".

The show also seems ambivalent on the issue of tone : Is it going for a 'sombre tone with little humour' or a 'parody of haruhi/evangelion with scattered melancholy'? It has completely failed to capture the perfect balance of the 'serious' and the 'not so serious', this same balance that blessed shows like Haruhi - 'LOL monologue' bouncing off 'LOL MIKU SO SILLY' brilliantly. The show too seems unable to decide on whether or not its 'cheesiness' should be laughed at or taken with a straight face.

Angel Beats also falls victim to deus ex machina, and ten-fold, not that this isn't blatantly obvious anyway.

There's absolutely no semblance of redeeming qualities, and therefore dropped. And before you note that 'there's only 7 episodes out', well, no shit. You don't need to perceive the entire series to recognize its shitness.

The flash back was a copy of Ushio's death in Clannad.

I'm glad Kanade is part of the group now. But I wish to learn more about her and finally see her open up.

The twist at the end was excellent. I hope we'll get Kanade vs Tenshi action soon. I also hope they don't completely eliminate the threat in the next episode like with Naoe. She should stay a threat for the rest of the show.

Think Naoe will be the villain of the show. - Nope. He turns good in one episode.

Think Otonashi's lost memories will play a huge role in the plot. - Nope. They're just an ordinary sad one.

Think each episode will have someone disappearing until they all do. - Nope. Only one person has disappeared and the show fooled you by making you think Hinata and Naoe disappeared.

Angel Beats seems to be purposely misleading the viewer.

I agree to a certain extent. It's hard to predict what's going to happen in the next episode. However, the relationship between Otonashi and Kanade appears to be moving along nicely, so I won't be surprised if either both parties start to develop feeligns for each other.

Another reason why I'd like to see them being paired up in the end is because the quiet, emotionless girl is rarely chosen by the protagonist.

Not really. If you were in his shoes, and you killed yourself, then that means you're weaker than him. He's not emo. He knows he can make a difference. He took his past and made it his fuel for change and progress. The only problem is, luck wasn't on his side.

I believe this applies to everyone on that afterlife too. For example, Iwasawa. She was happy with her music, she managed to make a name for herself, and put her family problems behind. But then, a past injury had to resurface, taking her out at the peak of her short career.

Absolute despair. That's what's driving the SSS on their fight against God.

Character masks. If you want to figure out something, you need to look deeper. Does Otonashi behave differently? Hard to tell. Why would he? Their conversation at the roof meant that he would still be pretty much his normal self pre-memory recovery. The only difference might be that he may have found a reason to hate the system now -- a reason to fight God. When will we see this? Wait for the next episodes.

It's like they were still trying to think of what kind of melodramatic KEY-esque background story to give him while the show already started airing and just made him an amnesiac to buy themselves some more time.

I hope they will at least include something like this in the future episodes so his backstory isn't entirely pointless, but the show has been pretty disappointing (disappointing for me, lolopinions) so far. At this point I wouldn't be surprised if his backstory ends up having nothing to to do with the rest of the show after all.

Before, they died because of themselves, or because it was required for their mission. Never had they faced an enemy who would kill all of them in cold blood, proclaiming to be God. Not only that, but wouldn't it just make you desperate to see that all of your friends died in a futile battle and that you were the only one left to face the bad guy?

No. What you call superficial IS what it IS. You are seeing what ISN'T THERE, and if you can't see the signs of forced dramatics, then you're a fool.

What you are "seeing" probably hasn't been thought of, your putting in pieces where there are none. If a show cannot defend itself, and needs people like you to put in meaning where the show so clearly left it out, that's bad writing, that's inconsistency, and that's you trying to make gold out of shit.

I don't care about this "forced drama" buzzword, but I will put logic where it belongs. I don't care if the writing is shallow or w/e, but when you suggest that something that is so easily seen to be false or whatnot, then there is something wrong there. See, you don't even need to put much thought. The scale is different. The situation is different. It's like comparing a quick game of catch to major league baseball.

Make that 4-5. I'm not even trolling. This whole 'they-die-all-the-time-no-big-deal-OH-WAIT-NOW-IT-IS' thing's getting on my nerves.

Honestly? They've got no qualms about killing themselves or their teammates if need be, and all of a sudden, somebody gets worked up over someone being beaten up. Oh, boo-hoo. Otonashi is the worst case of this, and he's infecting Tenshi with his nonsensical moralfaggotry. "I HAVE TO SAVE THEM!" -- WHY?! THEY WON'T DIE! THEY DON'T EVEN CARE IF THEY 'DIE'! Oh, it's supposed to be symbolic? Signalise Tenshi's becoming good? It's still just shitty writing.

My honest opinion of episode seven is that finally we get to see what Otonashi's past life was. His past life was a struggle, working multiple jobs just support himself and her sick sister. When her sick sister finally recovered, he has lost his purpose and has to find a new one.

It is hinted that in episode seven he wanted to be a doctor so he can save people, so he studied for his exams and finally got into university. But then fate changed and since entering purgatory he has lost his purpose in life.

But since he has recovered his memories and gotten used to life with the SSS, he has found a new purpose in the life before the afterlife

One of the major themes in Angel Beats is simply purpose? What does a person do when he lost purpose in life?

The ridiculous overly dramatic parts wouldn't be so bad if they didn't spend the other half of the episode making jokes. And that wouldn't be so bad on its own if they made a smooth transition between the two moods, but they don't. It just has bad writing.

The SSS is clearly used to dying. To them, it's probably a natural part of that world and even though it's painful, they laugh it off just because it is painful. The best way to cope with anything is to make it funny. Deaths can still be pretty shocking though to the SSS, such as the case with the laser wall.

If there's anything that can be said, is that the leader, Yuri, and probably Hinata don't really mind if the people they hire were their enemies. They've done it multiple times, why would Naoi and Kanade be any different? They've probably have recruited multiple people who've attacked them brutally. After a bit, it's just water under the bridge.

Also, would anyone want to translate this comic?

It takes an undetermined amount of time to "respawn". We don't know how long the SSS had been dead there or had been fighting. After the rain, it had been dusk, and when Otonashi had taken Kanade to get food, it had been way before lunch. Plus a small nap, they could have been fighting for several hours.

Considering they were *covered* in blood and there were literal pools of the stuff (And since they had no visible wounds we can assume that they mostly respawned), they would have died from sheer bloodloss at the very least, or they were killed manually a time or two. Take your pick.

And then there were the rocket chairs which were deadly at the very least (Head trauma is very dangerous, they likely died), only to get up and bitch at Yuri a few seconds later. The amount of time it takes to respawn could be entirely based on how much outer damage you take (i.e. squished/split apart like TK/5dan takes longer than a spinal tap)
