It's basically three reasons this getting so much popularity;

1. Obviously, otaku friendly characters who are highly detailed than any other animes. Although, Shenjougahara/Suruga aren't really typical characters we've seen before.
2. High quality animation and art. bah
3. Intelligent dialogues, which might be turn on or off for some. It was turn on for me.

Moe-trope focused anime is most of the time, not my cup of tea. However, even though Bakemonogatari looks really like otaku stereotipical series at first glance, it actually isn't; since there are few characters and relationships which are so unique and uncommon in other animes. (I mean... Shenjougahara and Araragi's relationship is just... werid.)

There is a clear difference between the quality of animation and the animation itself not even being animated.

In Blu-ray version, quality was definitely there. If you were referring TV series version, well still the art was top quality (except 6 fingers) and so the animation was (except nadeko arc). Thus, my claim is pretty legit.

I don't think it's pretentious, it's just...inaccessible. Regular english-speaking viewers will miss a lot when trying to watch this show due to all the wordplay and japanese mythology that goes on in it. Those who stick with it and attempt to get it, therefore, believe they are achieving a 'higher understanding' of anime and japanese culture than those around them.

So it's not the show itself that is pretentious. It's the people who watch it.

Personally, I got up to episode 3 before I stopped following it. The quality was obvious, but I couldn't enjoy it due to the lacking ability of the fan-subbers to transcribe events accurately.

I love this series! Maybe because it has a bunch of style and great characters, with witty and intelligent dialogue. You have to have a certain taste to really enjoy this type of anime. I liked how it was basically like Mushi-shi but with a Moe/Otaku edge. I really hope that it gets licensed soon as I will support it's release here. SHAFT did a great job with the artwork and its very high quality, bright, unique, and overall cool in my book. Now the animation is great too, yeah there barely is none, but when the characters do move, its very fluid and smooth and since the characters are talking most of the time there's no need for a lot of animation. The camera angles and cinematography is what makes me happy! :)

Dialogues in this anime greatly contributed to not only the establishment and characterisation of each cast (and of course, except Nadeko.), but also creating such a unique tone and mood throughout the whole series; Shenjogahara and Oshino's conversation with araragi in Mayoi arc was my personal favourite.

Views on the show are polarized because of the standard mentality on /a/ that if someone likes somehing you better do your best to hate it on principle. I laud it as being one of my favorites because I found watching it was a pleasing experience. That isn't to say I'd put it on a list of the most influential anime ever list, which is a distinction most people are unable to make.

It's not so much that the dialogue is "intelligent" or not, but that Nisio Isin writes in a really esoteric way even in Japanese.

Seriously, even Japanese people have trouble grasping his dialogue all the time. Filtered through fansubs and the interpretation of fansubbers, the effect gets compounded.

...well, let's stop trying to troll people. I did like Bakemonogatari, because the characters were actually written as real as possible. This is what a harem could be, not "lol, I fell for you for no explainable reason, even as you are absolutely bland" as it usually is (there are enough exceptions luckily). I like the talking (I am loving Yojouhan in the moment for example), and as for the animation... there may not be much of it, but at least every random screenshot can work perfectly as a wallpaper. Besides this... the characters are late bloomers, and I can relate to them... and they are smarter than the usual anime idiots. Also, I like SHAFT's art style. Personal preference, you know. Overall, it certainly is different from the usual anime, for good or bad... This doesn't make it a masterpiece or must-see or anything, there is no point people who expect something more than talking to watch it.

I cannot really agree. If nothing else, at least he is a little smarter. Instead of a normal bland guy, Koyomi is actually pretty much without friends. And, well, find me even one character that doesn't even think twice before going to die for... somebody that hates him and is in love with his girlfriend. Not even change in the expression. I suppose that this extremeness in the depiction makes him a little less real, but I actually can imagine somebody real like that, so it just adds to the deconstruction of the harem lead: some things put to the extreme, some things changed to make him actually real.

It only seems like a slide-show because of the red/black screens that punctuated it. In another series, the time spent on those black screens would have been used on flapping mouths.
