language school (if just for a month-long course) and volunteering (short-term projects last about 2 weeks) are great ways to see japan, when you are on a tight budget. i`m not interested in mainstream tourist "attractions" anyway, i`d like to communicate with people and get immersed into atmosphere of real japan. as for the money question - i actually own a small business, and hope i can keep some degree of control, coordinating my management over internet. that`s why i can`t go for a longer language course (3-6 months or more) but money is not so much an issue for me. besides, people who go for several-years long courses usually find some part-time work there to cover expenses at least partially

Sure, I make 'real life' decisions all the time because of anime, mostly in what I seek out for entertainment, and the related things I choose to learn more about. I became a fan of the Electric Light Orchestra, for instance, because their music was introduced to me in anime (Daikon IV). And I suppose it inspired me to learn more about Japanese cuisine, though I enjoyed cooking before I started watching anime.

I haven't made any real big decisions because of anime, but I've made plenty of little ones (tangentially related to a lot of the music I listen to and the websites I visit), and in turn those have made an impact on the way I live day to day, so all considered it has had a massive impact on my life. And in some ways, it's impossible to view fictional characters and settings without being inspired to think new thoughts about your own life, so who knows, I might be somewhere totally different right now if it weren't for this stuff...
